coon feeders
Does anyone use coon feeders? If so I would like some ideas on building some, so any pics would be great. Also what kind of feed are you useing in them? I want to use something that is less likely to bring in yotes. All I have right now are young dogs I need to get trailing and treeing and we don't have very many coon here. Thanks

Re: coon feeders
bearbait....
I can't take a pic right now but I'll do my best to describe one for you.
I use a 55 gal. drum with a full size removable lid that seals on with a ring. I cut a piece of plywood into an oval shape to make a slanted floor in the barrel. Then I cut a 2"x2" hole in the edge of the barrel at the bottom of the plywood floor. I don't cut out to whole piece...I leave the bottom of the 2" still attached so you can use it as a "damper" to controll the ammount of bait that the coons will get at one time. I generally use the cheapest dog food and mix it with the cheapest grain I can find(whole corn or similar). If you put in a 50# bag of each it should last quite a while so you don't have to fill it very often. I set the whole barel up on some 2"x8"'s on edge so it is up off the ground a ways. To get them started you may have to throw some out on the ground around the feeder. I havn't had any issues with the coyotes but the geese and ducks and skunks like it!
I'll get a pic if you want one.

Re: coon feeders
Seen pics of some in a magazine that were just an old pickup tire still on the rim and they drill or cut 2" circles in the sidewalls for the coons to reach in and get the feed. Heavy enough not to get moved around and cattle and stuff couldn't get to the bait.

Re: coon feeders
5 gallon bucket with 2inch PVC nipple near the bottom, commercial pelleted fish food works great as bait and deer dont hang around your bucket either

Re: coon feeders
i built one i get pics later i used a 35gal barrel that the bottom rusted out of then i took old boards i had laying around and screwed vertically them right in to the barrel then i took 2 more and put them crossways to make it more stable then i put a pice of plywood about 6in from the bottom to slow the flow of food. i just use the cheapest dog food i can find works great havent had any skunks just coons, kittens, a fox and a whole lot of magpies only problem it lets to much food out at once
Re: coon feeders
5' length of 4" solid PVC pipe with a cleanout cap on top and a 90degree elbow on the bottom with a 1 1/2 or 2" bushing on the end - fill with whole kernel corn. Tie off to tree - all set - coon has to reach into the bushin for the corn - pretty much deer proof and don't see why coyotes would bother it.

Re: coon feeders
x2 on the 5 gallon bucket with the 2" pvc. fill it up, snap on the lid, and it will keep them busy for a long time. the trick is to not shoot out the coons that come in to the feeders, that way you have a spot to go and get a race going on a regular basis. Also, don't put it in a spot that already gets hit hard by other hunters. pick a spur road or spot that you have to walk in a little ways, keeps from everyone striking them off the box in what few spots washington has left open to hunt.
