Day vs Night hunting

Postby ALEX » Thu Sep 01, 2011 1:10 am

To all of you who hunt both at night and during the day time, what can you say are the margins between how many your hounds tree in the daytime vs night when coons are mainly active? I just want to know if the % caught in the day can be equal, more or less than traditional night hunting. Thanks.

I hunt more in the day for coons. Catch just as many during the day than night. I don't like to run all night like most others. I get there and done before they all come out. Plus the skunks are everywhere at night!

I cant say that I have done all day hunting for coon, except when we have had a large snow storm blow in for a few days keeping snow on the ground and everything moves all day, but the best time for me is about 2hrs before sunrise and then about 1 to 2 hours after first light, seem to get the most coons about an hour before sunrise...I would say here in OK that the % would be down for running day coons.

It depends if you know what you are doing or not, or more less the dogs know what there doing. Where i hunt alot of times the coons are layed up and you gotta cast the dogs and teach them where the coons are and they gotta jump them out of there beds or dens. Alot in the briars and tulies as well, they gotta get in there and work for them. But we catch just as many in the day time as night, although you gotta work a little more untill the dogs figure it out. We went out the other day got there about 8:15 Am and caught 3 coons and were back to the trucl loaded up and on the road by 11 am. Dc
