Hound Silent on Track

Postby CoonBaumer » Mon Dec 16, 2013 9:55 pm

Is it normal for a hounds 7th time out and still be silent while tracking. He has seen a coon and got into a couple of fights, so it's not like he doesn't know what a coon is. I heard that a lot of night champion coonhounds are silent while tracking. Do you think it's just my dogs genetics or do you think he will eventually catch on? I just don't know if he is trackingor not? Any advice would be helpful.

Is he a walker ? Lot of walkers are silent on a track and silent ones tend to move a track fast. I've had dogs that didn't open until they were under coon.

Yep, he is a walker.Have you had this problem at all? I just don't know if he is tracking a coon or not? I'm running him with my friends hounds, that are experienced coon hounds. The next time they tree I plan on shooting it out for my hound, and then tying him up,and then releasing him when the coon is off and running. So that gives him a chance to track.
thanks

I've seen several dogs run hot coons silent or semi silent. Not very enjoyable if you wanting to here him run. But these kind of dogs are deadly in competition hunts. Trap you a coon in a live trap and turn it out for him and let him run it by himself. If he's a true silent dog on track your not gonna make him bark.

My male dog was very open on track until he was a 2 year old. Now I never here him open until he's locating and about to tree. He went all silent until he gets treed with coon and I kinda like it.

I had a black an tan run silent her whole life great coon dog only time she barked was treed did bother me none cause she always would have it gps today will help you to know where your dog is when he running silent. I wouldn't get to concerned about it. I think they run silent cause they want to catch it instead of treeing it just my opinion.

Chiller, He is 2 years old. Has Been hunted like 15 times. I took him out like a couple of months ago, and he started running trash, but he was opening up on the track a little bit. He has been hunted in 4 months, but I'm going out tonight. I guess we will see how he does tonight?

I have a Redbone that is silent on track. In my opinion its better if a dog is silent because say they are running a coon and they are barking on track, the coon hears them and starts running and therefore you got a long chase. But if they are silent on track the coon doesn't know that they are there until the dog is really close and the coon just trees up quickly. It just depends on the dog, it is normal. Sometimes the dog will come around and start barking on track and sometimes they won't. Like I said it just depends on the dog. If you want to sit on the tail gate and listen to the dogs running a coon and you aren't out to kill a bunch of coon you want a dog that barks on track. But if you want to get to trees quickly and kill a lot of coon you will want a dog that is silent. The only disadvantage is you dont know if they are tracking a coon or are goofing around.

I have a 3 year old bluetick. She barks on locate then barks on tree. When she was younger she would make a lose then bark when re locating. She puts coons up fast!! 90 percent are treed within 300 yards of the locate. So she's probably a little hot nosed also. It's perfect for where I live with small sections of property. Put em up then onto the next. Lots of guys like that style of hound. In my opinion and limited experience.... Your dog will stay a silent tracker. Take him out by himself drive around till you see a coon cross the road or let one out of a live trap on the side of the road . Take him there and encourage him to trail it. Get the coon wet there will be more scent. Point at the track and enthusiastically encourage him to run it. See what happens

I have 2 running walkers, they hit the ground off the truck at a strike and never open one time until they are looking at the bear, if the bear runs his heart out they bark very little to none if the bear wants to bay, the two are a solid roar. Seems like they just want it to fight. It is just what they do it is how they like run a bear I figure. It is not my style of hound hunting I love to hear a good race from truck to tree, just to have something up a tree and to have no idea how it happens cuz I couldn't hear means nothing to me but I think it is just how some dogs like to do it in my experience they never change.

i have a walker female that is semi silent alone but opens up more with company. if dogs start to trash, she will run with um but not make a sound. makes correcting her a lot easier. I wish she would run silent because of the area I hunt is mostly all small patches. for coon hunting around my area me ideal hound would be a hot nosed silent dog with a good handel.
If it were me and im a long ways from an expert, I would hunt him alone and watch the garmin learn how he is hunting or not hunting. is he working a small area or a big loop or just blowing out of the country? I think you will soon see how your dog is hunting and will be able to tell most of the time what he is doing without him making a sound. I know my dog takes the easy way anytime she can. she prefers to run atv trails walking trails or even a good used game trail. this is something I wish she dint do but its how she hunts. because of this I know when I see on the garmin she makes a turn and gets off the beaten path she is going to strike.
