age and method?

i got a four month old plott thats been to the woods twice and he doesnt pay any attention to me.....i got a 4 year old plott i took out with him and she takes off right away and he runs and runs til he cant see her ahead of him anymore and then he howls for a bit and runs back to me.......when i walk my old dog out he sniffs exactly where she does......think hes ready for me to set up a short race with a cage coon and get in on that???? or should i see how he does on the track first and then put my old dog on it???
