Big Problems with Slick Trees in the hounds of this days.

I have never been in a competition coon hunt, in Mexico we don´t have them and for what I have read, I will never one to do that, because of the dogs that are winning in those competitions.

I have been a suscriber for Full Cry and Coonhound Bloodlines for more than 10 years.
In the Month of November there is an article the 2009 UKC World Final Cast. It say that almost 5,900 coonhounds attempted to qualify for the 2009 World Championship. But in the final four there were a tight between the fourth and fifth dog, so they have to compete those only two hounds and only one will join the other three for the final cast.

And this is what its says of those to two hounds literaly.

On their first turnout, the two dogs split, Rock had the coon, but Hawks tree was circled. They went on to make several more trees separately and back each other on two separate occasions, but no coons were seen in any of them. Rock came out the victory and was awarded a spot in the final four.

If those two dogs were the final 5 best dogs from the 5,900 they started for the World Hunt. And for what I read, they are very good in treeing trees but no coons. Why are they running and crossing those kind of hounds.

I have had some experience with slick treeing idiots and it is frustrating.

Something has to be done.

I'm new to coon hunting, and was wondering what is meant by slick treeing?

Do you think it's the dogs or the training thier subjected to?In competion hunts if a dogs called treed it better stay treed or you loose points.First tree more points.I think they push them to lock on trees during training, and don't push the check issue.J.M.O IV'E had some dealings with the competion scene and it can get kind of fierce.R.Brocious

I'm new to coon hunting, and only have a 6 month old walker/catahoula cross. Is slick treeing something that just happens, or is it something that needs breaking? He hasn't done that yet. Just confusing to me cause it doesn't sound like a trait that is desirable. Kinda like one of my curs baying a hog waller. Just curious what to expect from my pup, don't wanna put him through the ringer to much if it's just something that happens when running animals that tree.

the experience that i've had is that if you train the dogs on squirrels they will slick tree at least for me anyway.

back in tha old days dogs would pull whats called a locate on a tree then circle to find a trail leaving if not then they would tree they dont do that much any more most comp hunters want that dog to fall treed soon as it smells coon on a tree.

I at one time was an avid comp hunter and can assure you the problem is in careless breeders and trainers particularly in the walker breed! They want a fast dog who gets treed fast and does it with style. I quit because it was becoming a joke and were seeing very few coondogs! The pkc has only made it worse by adding money and not requiring a coon to be seen to win the purse! Hot buckets take away the requirement of breeding for nose and trailing ability. Basically its this way. You want a good dog go to a big game hunter because they still need all the traits in a dog not just speed and tree and definatly not a comp walker! Jmo but don't take me wrong there are good walkers too just needs to be from a big game hunter!
