male got worse female got beter

when i first started the female would wonder around trail to the tree and wouldnt bark up the tree the male did the same except treed some and then when encouraged treed hard....but the female figured it out and is getting beter...the male just watches for movement in the tree sees some barks a little but stops and just looks up..any ideas on training them to use their noses more and not have to see it to believe it..they are 10 months old now havent ever had a drag except once...treed squirrels and a couple coon female getting good male gettn worse..so what should i do?

Sounds to me like they are doing OK for thier age. Just get them more experience. You can't expect too much from them at that age.

I have the same problem, only mine will first run then after they calm down they will trailing and they will tree good for about a minute tops and then I tie them up next to the tree so they dont mill around. I was told they are doing pretty good for their age so Im not too concerned. Just going to put them under more and more game, can only help! They'll catch on I think.

It all depends on what you are doing. If you have been getting them out a lot, I mean more than 4 times a week you may want to keep an eye on your male and think about not hunting him. I have an 8 month old pup right now that has no problem doing it by himself and that is what i like in my dogs. You have to remember that dogs have a lot of styles just as people. Some dogs want more like people, and some dogs want less like people. If you are questioning this dog, give him a little more time to see if he comes around, and if he doesn't then its all up to you.
