for some young dogs would it be a good idea to use a coon squaler to call up a coon for the dog to chase or should i call one up to shoot it and use it as a drag and sight in a tree?

Squalers imitate the sound of a dying coon and are useful to get a treed coon to show it's eyes and sometimes they will jump out.
99% of the time they will not call a coon.
best get you a copy of the 2 Walk With Wick books and read both of them. you can get them from Nite Light Co. you will learn a lot about starting young hounds from those books. they are the best available and are just good reading written in words that are not talking over your head.

I have seen them called in with predator calls but never with a squaler. You sure they were using a squaler and not a hand predator call?
