will it work?

Postby buster95 » Fri Mar 26, 2010 12:07 pm

those pups i got are 11 months and i no messed up by showing them probably too many caged coons..il admit that..but at night they run with old dogs one at a time and didnt tree till i told them then the male went off the female waited til the coon fell from tree then was hammering hard when i chucked it back up...the male saw the coon in the coon light and also went off..but will hunting them one at a time with old straight dogs get them used to following trails and treein at night??i plan on hunting them with the older dogs fora while then slowly bythemselves i plan to hunt them and get them used to doing it by themselves yet sometimes still going with other dogs...should i tie them back at the tree so that they want to go with the old dog cuz he gets the action and they will do what he or she does?i dont know just a thought of what will make them learn to pick up the scent beter.or are they to old to use training scents on? :?

You have them started which is about all YOU can do except for trash breaking. IF you have a decent old dog to hunt them with just take them hunting often. REMEMBER that they will progress on THEIR schedule not YOURS. If you try to force things you are more likely to hurt than help.

I basically start mine in same manor but I haven't had a pup trainer.Once mine started treeing squirels and doing it with a little something which has been around 5-6 months old, from 6-8 months is basic training and walking thru the woods getting them ready going days, nights, evenings at 8 -9 months comes the caged coon not to say that they aren't treeing everything that will climb a tree then about every other day for seven days comes the cage coon for about 15 min. but before they get bored during these days that's all the attention they get by that time they are use to the woods I take mine and turn them out and sit on the bed of the truck while the pup goes to wondering if you got coon like I do it don't take long for them to think back to the caged coon smell and the farther they go out the more chance of crossing that scent then bawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. Then I just slowly walk behind them.Oh yea scent break has worked well for me personally started that at 8 months old also.Good Luck Heath
