iam new to hounds and i have trapped coons every now and again for my pups.just curious, on there activity during the winter months?

i just trapped them up until this year when i got my dog but generally when its cold like this i could catch them in barns a lot and i would make trail sets with footholds wherever i could find them.....usually between implements that have been sitting for a long time i would find trails in the snow.....but i went last night which was the first time ive been out since our deer season and we didnt even strike a track......up until that night we got at least one coon every time we went......ive been driving around tho lookin for tracks.......near creek bridges and spots i know coons frequent in my area and im not seeing anything......its supposed to hit 30 nxt week so im gonna give it a try then u can usually tell if they have been denned up for a while cuz when u start killing them again u will notice the belly fur is piss stained

Not much movement in the winter months.. they'll come out to get a drink and back to the den

I do some coonin in the winter months. IF the temp holds over 32 degress at night something will generally come out and take a peek at things or get a dring at the creek. Any temp below freezing and you might as well stay home.

They'll come out on the warmer days.

funny thing is here in ID where I hunt mostly we tree more coon in the winter than any other time and the colder the better for me if the ponds and creeks are frozen i almost always catch if its muddy we just cold trail around would think the mud would hold sent best

around here it gets pretty slow during the cold. some time you can get one up though.

Here in WI they'll be breeding next month. The males will be out leaving a lot of scent. Good for training.

thanks everybody for the feedback, the past couple of weeks it has been cold and snowing like no other. hey calkins, you were sayin the males should be out. how long do coons usually rut?do they start in january and end sometime in february?

I'm not sure exactly. I think they rut for a couple weeks in the start of February. Don't take my word for it though.

Coons are starting to move on the warmer days here. I have seen a ton of tracks coyote hunting.

I have more fun coon hunting in the the snow after day light. Just like lion hunting but with out the crowd or worring about another houndman beating you to a track.

Bill have you got plans next weekend? Its a 3 day weekend for me so I was thinking about coming over and doing some coon/rabbit hunting. The snow is to deep here to turn dogs loose.

dang if Tn.bear hunter don`t look a lot lie Ross Bagwell of Dover Tn (boss hog or rossco) we call Ross. Seams too me I`ve see them faces at the cathys cafe dover hunt PKC clug on hunt compition night and at Arurra for the Open World Hunt and SS STAKES ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT ?!!
