Re: I got ? Recasting dogs and coon skining
Thats a good question. I have two finished coon dogs(littermates). The female will chew the hell out of a coon if you let her. She does not want to leave her catch. The male, on the other hand, as soon as the coon hits the ground if it has life in it he will finish it off and go hunt. If it hits the ground dead he takes one sniff and is off hunting again. I trained them the same way and at the same time. They are both eaqually good. I'm not to worried about it they both strike, move a track with speed and accuracy and get treed and stay treed. It might just be a personality thing. I dont know for sure. Sorry I probably wasn't any help, like I said good question.
What I need is a cure for tree climbing.

Re: I got ? Recasting dogs and coon skining
As you can probably tell by the question I'm about to ask, I'm no professional coon hunter. Is it easier to skin a coon immediately after shooting it or does it matter if you let it set for a couple hours? My dogs are allowed to chew on it for a while, but as soon as there is no life in it, I just clap my hands and say "let's go!". If they don't come they will get a tone and then the same procedure is followed again, but if they don't come this time it's tone first and then a gentle shock. After the first one of the night, it never gets to the tone again. This doesn't seem to deter them from hunting or treeing.
Or why don't you just throw the coon in your pack and collect them through the night and skin them all at once when your done?
just my .02

Re: I got ? Recasting dogs and coon skining
Cj good luck on the tree climbinjg cuz if its climable there gona climb it! Ive seen dogs have to get poked out like a coon with a poke pole cuz even with the shock collar cranked up they would just hug the lem they were on and take it.They went so high up into the tree that they boogered the heck up
Tom whats the need for peeling them right after the catch? every time you get half way through you know there gona catch another!!Then you'll be stacked up!!Have one almost skined and one in a tree or on the ground and dogs barking anyways

Tom, if this is your biggest problem I think your doing pretty good.
Radar, I have to climb trees all the time to help them down. I've had them fall twenty feet. If I cant get em I try to encourage them to jump. Jumpings better than falling. We have been lucky so far. However, A couple months ago I came up on a tree my male was dangling from his back leg(wedged inbetween two branches) over hanging the river with his head under water. My heart sank. I jumped in and freed him and he popped up and started treeing with out missing a beat. Thats why I got the new pup. I'm affraid that male is gonna get himself killed.
Sheimer, Fresh coons are much easer to skin than a stiff ones and much lighter to carry. But I am the opposite of Tom. I dont wanna be sitting there skinnin a coon a mile away from my stupid tree climbing dog, treeing on a new coon getting into who knows what kinda trouble. I like to stay as close to the race as possible. I wanna get to that tree asap. I usually skin the next day.

Re: I got ? Recasting dogs and coon skining
Tom .. I think you are going to do OK
I've only been at this for 50 years
those coon are a lot easier to skin ASAP ---the time lost skinning them will not amount to much. just tie the dogs back skin them and Enjoy the next run.. I can skin most coon in about 3 minutes in the woods.
I have been skinning them in the woods for years. when someone wants one to cook I usually have a plastic bag to put the carcass in...
will be packing the plastic this year a good bit.

Brady, some people just don't understand. I'm just glad he don't hunt any where close to my spots.
