Anyone hunt coon early in the morning or just before daylight? A warden in Oroville,ca said he had seen some houndsmen taking out coons during the day.

I hunt coons more in the morning than i do at night. It is nice walking in the bush without a light. I find that most of my runs are by far a lot longer in the morning than going at night. You are teaching the dog to ( if you want to say) cold trail more. The dog is not always taking hot tracks.

I hunt mornings only in the warm or hot months as temps are easier on the dogs. I also like the fact that most track are older, teaching dogs to trail and have patience.

Some den trees but catch a few on the ground. This is short tree country and usually the coons has to pick a short or small tree to escape the hounds...if you are really running him. Same is true with bobcats, sometimes they are not afforded the opportunity of finding the biggest tree on the ranch, just one that keeps them out of the jaws of old Blue.
Adios,
Gary
