Dog food?
Dog food?
I was just wondering what some of you feed your dogs. What you think the best food for the money is.
Thanks

Re: Dog food?
Atta Boy 50 lb bags $18.00. I feed liver and rice with gravy when they are run down. I have been thinking of feeding them horse/mule meat and beaver in the winter. I have never had an issue feeding Atta Boy, been feeding them it for 15 years now. From what a vet told me all dog food has diseased organs in it and horse/mule meat raw would be the best thing to feed. With the bones to chew on for their teeth.

Re: Dog food?
I feed butcher scraps and wild game. I get a lot of free day old bread and use it as dog food and to feed chickens which in turn give me lots of eggs and meat that I share with the dogs. Its poor chicken feed but it works. Makes em kinda fat in the winter when they don't free range as much. I also have a couple of miniture milk goats that can live off of just the grass in my back yard which they mow and fertilize. The goats give milk that I share with dogs also. So, its more work, but its better than free cause I'm feeding the family also. I use dog food too, but don't like most of them because they make gross waste. Protein/fat and good quality day old wheat bread are the way to go.

I feed Black Gold 26-18 and the dog do great on it. Very little waste and firm stools. This is very important as I keep my dogs on concrete, also makes it easy to see what is going on.
It costs approx. $30 for a 50# bag and I feed about two cups per day to a 50-60 pound dog. Years ago, Steve my youngest ran a test on Diamond, Purina and Black Gold. I had three yearling dogs from the same litter, each was fed one brand. At the end of two months, Black Gold was the cheapest to feed per day and the dog receiving Black Gold had the best haircoat. We found that the dog on Purina had to be fed more volume to maintain comparable body condition and had loose stools most of the time. Diamond was second but the cost per day was higher. I can't remember figures as it has been over 10 years.
Another huge reason to support Black Gold is they support hunting. The Allen family who owns Black Gold has a kennel full of walker foxhounds and are very active in hunting with hounds.
Adios,
Gary

Re: Dog food?
Black and Gold is the dog food I've been feeding when I use dog food, however its been getting lighter in color lately and it seems the quality is linked to the color. Anyone else notice that. Its not black, maybe I'm getting the gold now, lol.
Re: Dog food?
I use Diamond dog foods, have for many years and have tried many others and still think Diamond is the best bang for your buck!
