Coon Tracks?

Postby savagman » Mon Dec 31, 2012 6:23 pm

Need some help here as I am new to the game. Found these tracks along a creek in North Central Arizona. I initially thought coon but have doubts after looking at tracks online. The 5 toes match up but they look too short and round. Thoughts? If yes why? And if no why?Appreciate the help.

Also a bit away fromt he creek around some huge cottonwoods the dogs went nuts. One tree my older dog kept looking up and barking treed weak. Nothing in the tree and I couldn't see any hollows. Thoughts?

Those are coon tracks. I had one for 9 years growing up. Now, I trap them for a living.

Thanks - all the books and online resources have them looking a bit different. I appreciate the help putting my second guessing to rest. Now I just need to get one in a tree.

Still finding tracks but not treeing coons. How old a track will your dogs mess with? Found these at about 9am and the dogs trailed it in dry powdery dirt for almost a mile. Never opened though. When we hit the gravel road the tracks were no longer visible and the dogs seemed to lose it. Nothing over that way but some alfalfa fields. Walked them to the only decent trees in the area but couldn't figure out where the coon went.

All of the pictures posted are coon tracks. Opossum and skunk tracks look nothing like coon tracks.

Best coon hunting I've ever done was spotlighting them at night and letting them run a ways and then turn loose. The powdery dirt never seems to hold the scent well here because my one dog seems pretty cold nosed on lions and bears but cant seem to trail a very old coon track in that powder. Just my opinion.

At first glance they look like coon tracks but after giving them a second look I am not sure. A coons hind feet leave a heel mark much like a barefoot human. I am not seeing that in these pics. If they are not coon I can't tell you what they are. Just not sure that they are coon tracks. I usually don't post here because I am not interested in starting a spitting contest and I am not wanting to start one now. JMO. Guy Landers

House cat tracks!!? I hope you're kidding. If you don't see five toes there you must have missed 2nd grade. Some of you guys need to get out more.
