Best coon bait

Postby mefishme1234 » Fri Apr 26, 2013 12:07 pm

want to get my plot going on coon. dog training season don't start here until july 1.. like to live trap a coon and tease her with it then let coon out and let her run it(the greenies would love that) I trapped some nuisance coons before and used canned cat food.. any other good bait? and other tips? like to put her to use... thanks

A lot depends on where you hope to catch one!

just a short time ago the varmits were eating my son's cat food..-- he is on the road trucking--
I set traps there with cat and dog food --caught one then a bunch of possums-- that stopped but the cat food was still being consumed at an alarming rate...
then I switches to tuna in oil in one trap and sardines in the other.. caught 2 in the trap with sardines(in oil).. none with the tuna.

about 3 years ago a fellow near here had coons getting his sweet corn I set 3 traps there with sardines he had 2 with fish heads and some flesh.. caught none--- I switched to peanut butter and honey in the next 2 weeks I caught 13 then it stopped!

last year I tried marshmellows with cherry flavor zip--- switched to the old sardines and oil--- the cheapest brand you can find...caught one the 1st night!

I use marshmellows and a little coon lure.

Peanut butter and Half eaten chicken bones. Traping marshy areas has given us the best luck.

Got a corn field up the road that's has a beaten coon trail all thw way around it in the wood edge.. I seen 7 different coon there when I sat there during bow season last few years.. I gonna buy a few more cages traps. Should I get a rolling cage or just use the trap to tease her and then let coon out for her to chase? how about rabies? would it be good to get her shot up every year? thanks srw

Rabies shots are a must have!

the cost if you get exposed is in the thousands of dollars.---take no chances with your hound.

If you can afford or make a rolling cage they are good but in a sturdy live trap, you can surely get them started by exposing them and then tie the dog up and release the coon...

I'm actually starting one of my plotts on coon too... I caught a coon in one night next to a small marsh with my live trap using canned tuna fish and a few marshmallows. Good luck!

Looking at some older coon hounds tomorrow. If I get them I will still use the coon and have her run with them..
