hound hunting help
Hi my name is Adrian and i have a 4 month old blue tick. I wasn't really much into hunting before i got this pup, but now that i have him i've been looking more and more into it. Reading up on a buch of topics but i think it'd be extremely helpful if someone experinced could point me out in the right direction. Or even if someone that hunts hounds in my location to show us the ropes in arizona. Please and Thank you.

Well first step is your going to need to figure out what you want him to hunt? That way so you know how to train him. I would ask around to see what everyone else hunts in Arizona, because i couldnt tell you im in tennessee.

There are coons here. I hunt and catch a few here and there. You can run them, lions, and bears. Id suggest getting you an older hound though to help train that pup. JMO.

Where about do you hunt coons? I've tried looking it up and some people say around camp verde? I would try and get another hound but they're not to popular in these parts. I was also looking at some articles on here and people ask round for hunting buddies. That would be ideal. For the pup and me as well. Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

Re: hound hunting help
What area of the state are you in? Arizona's habitats vary a lot. For coons I could not see driving very far unless you live in the city and have to drive to hunt anyway. I don't have coons in my area so hunt grey fox, bobcats and lion. It really depends what is common in your hunting area.

Re: hound hunting help
I do live in the city so i figured i would have to do some driving, which i don't mind at all really. What areas do you know of that has coon? I'm not sure about hunting lions or bears because i only have the one pup and i'm still kind of new to this. Hints why i'm here asking for help haha. Maybe in the future though. After i've got the hang of it, more hounds, and people to go with.

Not to be a jerk but its hard for people to bring new people into areas they hunt. Too many times word gets out and next thing u know ur pushed out if there. Loose lips sink ships kinda thing in this hound world.

Re: hound hunting help
That's totally understandable.. I get it but i wouldn't be one to talk considering i would have no one tell. I don't have friends that hunt and don't know anybody personally that does. That's why i'm here. Besides if i knew of a good spot i wouldn't blab about it all over. So i get where you're coming from. There might be some people out there willing a ind kind enough though im sure. If not i'll just keep researching myself. I'm dedicated enough. Just would take that much longer.

Re: hound hunting help
Okay so now that we have got to the point that you going to be chasing coon that helps. So what I'm about to tell you is how I would train one of my dogs. You don't have to do it exactly this way, because what works for me may not work for you. First off I would give my pup woods time, give him a chance to get used to his working environment. Next and this should be worked through all the time is handling. A well handling hound makes a hunt that much better. Sit, here, loading, and leash manners. There is many more but that is what I prefer. Next I would trap a live coon. I would let him bark at. Then tie him up and drag the cage through the woods a distance and hang it in a tree. Then cut him loose on it. This will help him with trailing and treeing. Start out by makin them easy then slowly make them harder. Then after doing that for a couple days take the coon and release it. Then bring the dog to the spot and let him track it and tree it. If he does find it and barks. Praise him real good, an then if you want to shoot it out to him. Keepin doing things like this. You can also use hides, and scent bottles to. Also I woul try to if you could to hunt him with older more experienced dogs. Make sure hose dogs are good and don't run trash. Also just keep taking him out in the woods. Time in the woods will teach him a lot of things. The main things to remember is to always praise him when he does good, don't give up, also make drags and lessons short. Keep them fun for him, you don't want to burn him out. Then once he is catchin game with other dogs consistently or by himself. I would trash brake him and make sure he is not running of game. That is basically what I do, I probably missed something, but I you have any more questions just ask.
