Female coons with babies.

Postby Jagdcrazy » Tue Apr 15, 2014 10:53 pm

I went out on Thursday. The Jagdterriers treed two coons, both were males. Are the females with babies now? I usually go to the same spot and tree more coons than two. What are your thoughts?

Yes, most should have new borns right now. Had my first call a week and a half ago and pulled mom and 5 kits out of an attic.

Dean is right about where they are
I do not know about the scent, but an old timer told me in the early 60's that they loose their scent when they have kittens, I surely cannot prove it, as if I could smell them I would not need the hounds... but in the time since then I can recall only about 3 times treeing a coon in a den with kittens.

It has always seemed like clockwork in my area the sows move hard the last of March but just disappear the first week of April and if you get to a den you have new kittens. Although I don't coon hunt much anymore I use to put the hounds away for awhile because many of our coons here den in bank hole, brush pile of rock pile not many den tree because there is not many trees suitable in this area, and i didn't want to take a chance of the hounds stumbling on them and killing them.

Pulled a female out of an attic today. She had not had her young ones yet and it looked like she was still several weeks away from having them. She was almost solid black, very unique coloring.
