If its legal in your state make you a feeder out of an old tire hang it in a tree where only coon can feed on it and fill it with sour corn. This will give you a spot to strike a hot coon. Just don't get to use to turning him out on the feeder all the time. Feeders are good for starting young dogs. Usually the coon won't run to far and trees. Good luck with your dog.

Whats the history behind your dog? Was it ever hunted before? Was it a hunter that gave it to you? There is usually a reason that a two year old dog is free. The advice that has been given is good, but if that doesn't work I wouldn't spend a lot of time working with the dog. It may turn out to be a hunting fool, but if not, go get a dog that is from proven stock, Nothing can be more discouraging to a new hunter than a dog that won't hunt and no game in the tree. After all that is what it is all about. Treeing game. Good luck and welcome to the world of hound hunting. We need all the young people we can get into the sport.

the guy that gave him to me never did anything with him. he pretty much was just a back yard dog but he sad he was always wanting to chase the cats around the yard and in the mountains was always trying to chase rabbits and squirrels.

on a older hound like that you show them a coon or cat and encourage them alot. then you deer break the dog at least scent break him from them. after that get the dog out ever hour you can in a area with game and as close to their active time as you can get and it should show you something pretty quick if he doesn't have any other issues and is socialized and handles well enough. i don't normally push trash breaking real hard first but a older dog is physically able to really enjoy chasing trash and can be hell to straighten out after only a handful of full blown trash races. and if chasing a hound for miles chasing trash doesn't try your temper some your a better man then me.
