Starting an older pup help?

Postby BlueHoundsMann13 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 3:15 am

Hey guys! I got a year and 2 month old pup that hasn't had much done with him on the lines of putting him on animals. He goes nuts on a coon tail and chases and bays at house cats running around. I have just set some coon traps to get him going better, so does he still have hope at his age? Any help with ideas on how to start him him is appreciated. Thank you!

Sure he has a chance at that age. Give him a good chance to prove himself and if it is in him it will come out. Time in the woods will tell the whole story but that dog is just right to get going good. Good luck.

Don't get in a big hurry to put him on a live coon. I have found that pups that are pushed really hard at an early age generally take and impress early on but peak early as well. I have had my best success with pups that I don't start hunting until they are 6-7 months of age and can stay up with the mature dogs pretty easily.
I think I would stay with the coon tail or hide and encourage him to tree the housecats until he at least sheds his puppy teeth.
Adios,

At a year and 2 months, (14 mo) that bugger is just right to hunt, like Gary said,7-8months is good, but 14 months dang sure is not too late.
a few years back, I had a female gave to me that was past 3 years-she had never been worked.....needless to say, it did not take long to make the grade!
Get it inthe woods.
