Dogs not leaving a dead coon alone?

This weekend was the first time in a long time that I struggled with my pair of hounds to leave the dead coon alone. Even when walking out they kept taking nips at him.
Friday night they got tangled up in a field for a while with a larger coon. In the past they would just keep spinning the coon and when I would get there I could hold them back and shoot it. This coon would charge back offensively. Finally got the dogs off him and he made it to a tree.
Does anyone think this fight might of triggered these two to keep grabbing dead coon longer?
I always tie them off at tree. I turn them loose when the coon is down and dead. They never used to stretch it or chew long.

Thanks Allen

Sometimes when you get mad at somthing it takes awhile to cool off and some dogs hold a grudge

Just an update on my dogs. I would not say I have trained them as much as I have trained my self. I now carry a large backpack style decoy bag for my dead coon. Once they are in the bag the dogs leave them alone. I carried out four of them at once. Worked great and I feel better not being upset with them after they did their job.

We skin them out in the woods . Easier to skin when warm plus alot easier to tote out .
