Hunting Humboldt

Postby newby » Tue Jan 06, 2009 6:23 pm

Hey guys...looking for some places to hunt coon around Humboldt Co. Public Land seems to be few and far between. Also lookin to get my pup going good on some cats...anyone around here willing to let me tag along for a couple trips. Maybe just some advise on where I could go to get a race going. Any help would be appreciated.

have you gone to your local BLM office and looked at some of their maps for your area. i was surprised how much public land i had to hunt on the rivers once i did this. you may be surprised to, never know untill you look at the maps.

Yeah...I know about the "farmers". That actually cuts into a lot of the huntable land around here (BLM). All those pot gardens make me a little uneasy to get off in the woods in certain areas. I have found at least one river bottom I can hunt for coon and fox, but they but right up to some dairy farms, so I gotta be careful.

I actually was referring to bobcats...wish we could run the heavy cats, that sounds like fun!

Is there really no one out this direction on the site? I used to run hounds when I was a kid and all those guys were really cool...willing to help a guy get started, it doesn't seem to be that way anymore around here.

I talked to one hunter who basically told me he couldn't help me out cause he hunted private property. I met another guy one time and he gave me his number, but when I called...I just kinda got the runaround. Gettin a little frustrated...any ideas?

i know how ya feel about gettin no help from houndsmen. i run alone 90% of the time. i only hvae two legit hound buddies, one live in colorado (im in mt) and one live two hours away in another town. you gunna run alone, jsut get used to that. :) good luck and keep at it

Cool...I used to live over there, but I wasn't hunting back then. I still go over that way all the time. My brother lives over there so we always get out and do some kind of hunting when I get over that way. I'll shoot you a PM next time I'm heading that way.

I'm not too familiar with humbolt county. but i am with lake and mendocino.
a great place fairly close is Jackson State Demostration Forest its in mendocino county. go to willits to highway 20 west and its 20 miles. or from highway 1 in fort bragg its 5 miles. not exactly your area, but its a good place to hunt, and not many people hunt or even go there. hope that helps ya out.

Thanks for the tip...that's kind of a long drive from here though. I was hoping find some places a little closer to home :) . It might be a fun place to change it up at though. Thanks again.
