I have spoken for a beagle (some walker) pup born a few weeks ago. I hope to train him as a deer dog.
I have 2 issues
1. I live in a subdivision and I wonder how many of you with more experience have luck using beagles that are also housepets. I have heard that it ruins a hunting dog.
2. The more immediate issue is that the mother of the pup was killed by a car. (By the owner on his way to a medical emergency in his own driveway.) The pups only just opened there eyes and are being kept in a pen and fed by bottle. Do you think I should take the pup. Will he have developmental or training issues related to losing the mother so early.
Thanks in advance
WC

house pet
i have a beagle that sleeps with my wife and i and is one of the very best rabbit dogs i have ever hunted with and she will do it every day if you take her i would love to have all my hounds in the house but my wife says no because our bed ain't big enough lol i do not believe that it will hurt the dog in any way as for bringing it home i would only do it if you are capable of taking care of it a pup without a mother is a lot of work and requires a lot of time and attention if the owner is set up and giving the care it requires i would leave it with him until the legal age in your state unless he can not take care of them all and needs the help good luck

i raised a pup on a bottle from day one--- she was normal and im hunting her grandpups now- i lost all the pups but one--i also lost a lot of sleep and would never do it again-- (i hope )
- a buddy took one and put it on another female- her pups were 3 weeks old , i thought they would maul baby pup ---big mistake
he raised one out of one -- lol i was like one out of 8
if you can find a lactating female --- rub some vicks on mothers nose and pup --- see if she will accept it-- if eyes are open you may be able to get them eating real soon -- if i am in a hurry to wean pups,i start offering mushy, warm , milk soaked food , or canned food , rite after eyes open , usually takes about a week before they are eating any amount - its very possible to wean pups 2 weeks earlier than normal if you work at it -- if its off season i let female decide when its time to wean -- lol

oh ya--- i said that pup was normal --- she wasnt exactly "normal" -- was daughters pet-- ive seen my daughter riding bicycle with fierce bear dog tied to bike with shoestring --dog carrying a doll in her mouth - that dog used to eat porcupines -- liked to crawl into bears mouth - liked to play with dolls when not hunting
-- daughter was 6-7 years old-- would be crying -- "why cant she be a normal dog " when i was sewing her up or pulling quills on the tailgate-
