One eyed Bluetick

Post by Michiganbear »

Hi i had to have one of my hounds eyes removed today. He hit a barbwire fence chasin a bear a and damaged the eye to total blindness. It then swelled causing pressure, which according tto the vet was like him having a constant migraine. Which i believe since if he bumped that side of his head he would just howl like no tomorrow. So needeless to say i had it taken out today. My question is had anyone ever had a one eyed hound????????? Hes a great bear/bobcat dog. Just wonderin if anyone had any similar cases or heard of any????????? Thanks

Sorry to hear that. Animals are pretty adaptable to circumstances and surroundings. I have never had a one eyed dog but I had a horse go blind in one eye. The kind of horse that you are afraid to put a price on. It took a little while but he learned to get around really well. I continued to work cattle on him, roping and doctoring. I just had to be careful about roping something on his blind side. Best of luck with your dog.

Some get alittle snappy on there blind side but he should be fine, other then the lifetime of shame for being a bluetick.   but honestly he should be ok once he gets used to it. good luck.

lmao@ lbell. I have heard of a few good one eyed dogs. varminator can tell you about a good cat dog that treed cats with one eye. I am with bell though, thinking the bluetic handicap would be the worse but on the other hand if he overcame that, then he should overcome a little thing like ripping his eye out with a rusty old piece of barb wire just fine.
no mater if you think you can or you think you cant,, you are probably rite.

Had a beagle deer hound lose an eye, couldn't tell it effected his hunting and running at all.
I've seen several good hounds with one, itll be fine. That reminds me of two friends that had a sorry dog that they hauled 75 miles to a dog trader to trade. They got there right after dark and the trader had a sign up that read, NO TRADING AFTER DARK. Well it took them about half hour to talk the trader into dealing with them. They picked out a dog loaded and took off out of there laughing all the way home how they had really stuck it to that ol boy. They kept telling each other, no trading after dark, ha ha ha. They got home one of them shined a light in the dog box and said, wait a minute something ain't right. They dragged the dog out and it only had one eye! One of them said, yeah we REALLY stuck it to him, said this dog will stay lost, when he leaves running he will be looking at every thing on one side when he turns around to come back hell be looking on the other side, every thing will look different, he'll stay lost we won't ever get him back. We really stuck it to him, getting him to trade after dark though.

If he ran into a barbed wire fence when he had two good eyes, chances are good he'll pay more attention to where he's going with the remaining eye!
Seriously, one of the better coondogs I've met was an English dog with only one eye. Of course, he did most of his hunting at night, so he couldn't see much anyway. Like most hounds, he used his nose to find his way around.
