fencing for kennel??????

Postby Michiganbear » Tue Mar 24, 2015 10:34 pm

I am on the process of building a kennel and was wondering if anyone has used anything different for there pens other than chain link? It's just so expensive I'm lookin for a more economical solution. Thanks

16 ft cattle panels are what I used and wooden posts every 8' to stiffen them up. $21 at tractor supply

2 inch by 4 inch 6 ft high horse fence its about the best thing I've found and it takes a stretch and keeps everything where it belongs big or small. I be had several sets of kennels made from it and really like it . its not ssuper cheap but its tuffer then most styles of chain link and less expensive then the heavy gauge industrial chainliink and doesn't need the rails to keep its height. And is taller then panels except the specialty welded wire panels .

And since those panels generally are around 4' high do you run a electric wire around the top or are your dogs fine with just the fence?

I have tarps stretched across for shade so they can't or don't try to jump out anyway

I used 4' sheep wire or woven wire and a barb wire strand on top. Ran a hot wire around the bottom for a few months so they wouldn't dig under. after they all got zapped a time or two haven't had any get out.

im curius about the TSC panels. im looking into redoing my dog pens. i have 5 foot horse fence up now with a hot wire on top and it works great. but after a few years, it has started to sag and look kind of crappy. id like to use the panels, but from the website it looks like the holes are 6 by 8 which seems kinda big to me. ever had any problems with that size? i could hog ring fencing on top of that but then whats the point i just doubled my cost. id like to hear about how it goes for you, thanks.

My smaller dog 55# female can stick her head out but she quit after she realized it does her no good. My bigger dog tries but his head is too big. The bottom 4 rows are 4x8" and I have chicken wire covering those that's buried to help with them digging out. Probably not the best setup ever but it's not super spendy and works. I have 2 dogs so I ran 4 in a square and one down the middle so they each have 16x8' which is bigger than most kennels I've seen

I live in the mountains and have bears at my place almost weekly in the summer and lions stroll through occasionally. I have about an acre and a half fenced off for my dogs. I'm using 6' tall field fencing. I also layed down 5' fencing on the inside around the entire fence that is buried and attached to the bottom of my vertical fence so they can't dig out. I've never had an escape.

the horse panels I have are 5ft tall 16 ft long and have about 1/4 inch "bars' no pup can stick their head thru... with steel post spaced 8 ft apart they stand up very well. one pen took 22 of those panels.. kind of costly-- about $45 each in 2007 but they have been well worth it. they can be unwired and moved if one desired to move. -- not as quick as a store bought "kennel"

I use 6ft no climb horse fencing. With PT 4x4 posts. 2x4 on top that horizontal between the posts. And a 2x12 on the bottom that's buried about 10 inches under the ground. So I have 2 inches of the 2x12 above ground that I can fence staple my fencing too. This setup works super slick.
