Coon dogs turned to bear n cat dogs, what do you think

Post by houndcrazyfool »

What do you guys think? What are the chances that a straight up coon dog will make a good bear or cat dog. Young a better chance than old...

I know a couple of guy's that have bought some coon dogs from Texas, and brought them back to New Mexico and made them some pretty good lion dogs out of them.It took a little time and work but they came around I personally never tried it ,all the dogs Ive bought have been proven big game dogs, one thing I would have to tell you them coon dogs did run bear too, but would not get in close, and really where bad about slick treeing. These dogs where also young 2 year olds so I can't say about a older dog.

The good old breeding in this female will make for a big game dog if she is still young enough and willing enough to work other game. Some dogs are really not interested in other game after they have been put on a lot of coon, but I think it is more in the way youn introduce them to it. I have a 7 year old Hardwood Boz, and Rock River Sackett bred male dog. He is a Grand Night Champion coon dog and has never been run on cat or bear. Now then this dog is a ground pounding hunting machine, he is very competitive and he is fast, cold nosed, and tuff. I have not hunted himon big game as I thought it might diminish his value as a coon dog, but really where they have coon hunts about the only game that would mess him up might be a bobcat. And if my coon dog slipped up and treed a bobcat you wouldn't find me whipping the fire out of it for sure.

Well this morning one of my little Nance bred females 8 monthes old roots out a feral cat and the race was on till it went under my tack shed. Well this old coon dogs was in there bellering like he had a boar coon caught digging and slobbering like all the rest of those cat crazed idiots. So I don't think it would take much for him to flip over and be a cat dog or a bear dog for that matter because he has so much hunt, so much drive and he is so competitive. It would ofcourse be better if he was a good deal younger but he has a lot of life left in him. So I would say your female will probably be the same way, that is very good breeding. Sackett,Clover and such make great big game dogs. You don't have to beleive me just go see Spanky>

We have had some success and some failure converting coon dogs to bear dogs 3 particular ones come into mind the first being a three year old direct son out of swamp rooster who was probably competition ready when we bought him he turned out to be one of my brothers top bear dogs in his guiding business and learned quickly how to handle a bear it is a guarantee that if want to know where the bears head is when bayed up in a thicket its where rooster is baying from.

The second and third one were year and half ready to compete coon dogs which although would run a bear would rather run a coon I will post a picture of all these dogs on a bear that we killed in a thicket from left to right is buck which I turned back in to a coon dog and made nite champion and bench champion and a win towards grand on each this year next is rooster who is still a top of the line bear dog third is a grizzly breed pup that didn't make the cut and was given to a coyote hunter and the blue English was sold as a coon dog for a quite a bit less than what was paid for him so i guess i would say that has been my experience some make it some don't it all depends on the dogs in the long run it is all cheaper to buy dogs from big game hunters not coon hunters. Best of luck Larry
