from a song about someone who stole the guys girl:
"...he's a bird..."
"...he's a dog..."
"...he's a bird dog."
Might have been a Johnny Horton tune.
From another Horton tune:
Ran so fast the hounds couldn't catch em (on down the mississippi to the gulf of mexico)

Johnny Cash song,

"But they'll laugh at you in Jackson, and I'll be dancin' on a Pony Keg.
They'll lead you 'round town like a scalded hound,
With your tail tucked between your legs,
Yeah, go to Jackson, you big-talkin' man."

"If your dog doesn't like someone you probably shouldn't either."

Hank Williams Sr - Howlin At The Moon

Some friends of mine asked me to go out on a huntin' spree
'Cause there ain't a hound dog in this state
That can hold a light to me
I ate three bones for dinner today, then I tried to tree a 'Coon

--------------------------

I'd quit my doggish ways
You Dirty Dog
Hottier than a hound on a fresh coon track

I've heard a few folks over the years say "well, it sure has got me treed" when they were encountering a difficulty with something...and these weren't hound people. Also how about every time someone says "I'm game", did you know that is a reference to the gameness of pit bulls.
