Cougar Plan Nonsense
Cougar Plan Nonsense
A meeting of a decision making committee of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) was recently held concerning the cougar management plan. There were two anti’s and no hound hunters in attendance. Luckily, making a decision was postponed until early December. Two knowledgeable and well spoken hounds men are now on the agenda to testify. Two small voices is not nearly enough. As the anti’s do, we must unite and flood ODFW with mail supporting hound hunting and disagreeing with their moronic cougar plan.
Here is the plan, and a little history, in a nutshell:
Measure 18 made hound hunting bears and cougars illegal in the mid-1990’s. The cougar population has gotten terribly out of hand since because the only effective way to hunt cougar is with hounds. The cougars are now causing big problems with the deer and elk populations and so fewer tags/licenses for them can be sold. ODFW plans on using money collected from all hunter’s licenses to pay someone they hire to hunt and kill cougars. These hunters will of course have to use hounds, because that is the only way to hunt them effectively.
Why in the world would ODFW pay someone to do something that many would pay for to be able to do!?
Politics of course. Oregon is under an incredibly ineffective governor right now and he hired his cronies, limo-liberals, to fill government positions with clout, ODFW positions too. Kowtowing to Portland, Salem and Eugene area high density and very liberal populations is the rule.
A spokeswoman from ODFW was quoted in The Oregonian (Portland’s newspaper) last week about how many letters against hunting they get and said, “think of how you would triple that problem” if more hunting was allowed. ODFW is not concerned with managing wildlife, it is concerned with how many letters it gets. So lets all write letters!
Most important is to let the commission how we feel. A very brief e-mail just supporting hound hunting is fine. The one I sent is 3 short paragraphs. They are having the meeting in about a month, so send an e-mail today, please.

Thank you and I hope you find it in your hearts to shoot out a quick e-mail.

Libby, You are correct in that we do need to be vocal.
But I'm am tired of just thowing my time into the wastebucket, It's only a few people that actually do anything, I'm not going to round them up and ask them to waste their time on this. I can give you each and every board member of OUSDA if you like and you can talk to them.
So instead of Losing my Voice over every issue that really doesn't matter I would prefer not to waste my time with issues that are on a Set of Railroad tracks.
We can complain about this train all we want but.. You will watch it pass you by.. You want to stop it, Your going to need to do it in the court room.
The Commission was HAND selected by the Governor, They have orders to do this. The Pressures that are making this happen are not the commssion.. You need to send you letters to the Governor, and the board of OHA.. That's where this is coming from right now.. NOT ODFW..

I dont know how you feel Buddy but if some one contacts me about why I was not at a meeting ( You know the one or two I miss a year)and they them-selves where not at the meeting supporting the very thing they are bit@*ing about. It will not go so well. I dont think it would go to well with any of the other OUSDA board members eather. If any one wants my number just ask. I would rather talk on the phone or face to face any day then on the computer.
That few people are there when they are needed and aways will be. When other people are only herd or seen when there is something going on, those few are in the back thinking, working and planning just about 24-7 OK not that much, but alot.
I will let every one know what is said at the OHA meeting that Tim and I are going to next week. DO not even know what to exspect at this moment.
Wingpatch,
Any help you may be able to give Buddy or my-self with the NRA would be appreciated very much. They are the biggest organization that may be able to help in the back end of this.

Take the youth hunting, they are the future of our sport.

Actually, all I was looking for were e-mails!
It would be nice to know when things related to this are coiming up so we could put out e-mails to ODFW or which ever organization needs them. I'll post the e-mail note I wrote as soon as it gets one more look over for accuracy. Then it'll simply be copy and paste
I'll poke around and find the e-mail address for Oregon's governor-ding-bat. He should be on the list. Give me an e-mail addy for OHA and I'll put them on my e-mail list too.

Libby,
I'm starting to figure out what is happening here, I didn't get it right away.. this is an EMAIL sent from ODFW to ***** asking for comments... and he forwarded it out to everyone on his email asking for you and everyone to send out comments .. .. so to speak..
I got a simular email from ODFW alittle while ago, Which I was perplexed with.. Since that never happend before...
In the last few years, I've can't remember been emailed by ODFW, or OHA to send in our comments....I've been to many meetings, and some workgroups.... So I must ask.. Why now????, Why are they all over us like stink on Sh*& wanting us to show up?? and Actually chasing us down for our comments????
Perhaps Not saying anything is making more of a Statement than they are comfortable with.. They sure are trying to figure us out right now.. After all.. We are the volunteers they were expecting to happily show up..
Why don't we just ask them to tell us what they are going to do and then we can at least feel like we made a difference. They sure didn't count or "Tally" the comments when we sent in comment about the cougar plan.. Why are they so nervous making the rules for it.....>>
On another thought.... MAYBE it's because 95% of the people didn't suport this plan.. Now they are complaining that only 5% are showing up to decide the rules.. That's just simple Math in my books they act surprized that that was how many people actually supported this plan????
Let OHA send their members to support this thing.. I sure as hell aint.. .
Anyhow I'm pretty much done with this topic.. I told my self I was going to stay out of this one... So much for that ideer!!!
What we need is to find the Right Road to get everyone on the band wagon..This one is just a Dead end..

If anyone wants the Details of the Propossed rules I've posted them last month on this thread.
Here they are again.
I'd be more than happy to talk about any of these proposed "RULES" but I'm done with this cougar plan.... That is not the topic of what they want.
In a Month I haven't figured anything to say about what rules they use.
Until you get to keep or Use the cat, I don't want to shoot it. And that's not what they are asking right now.
Back to the Erie.. silence.. :

You got an e-mail, Buddy...you must be special! I have tried for years to get them to tell me what when they have meetings scheduled. Apparently no such list exists for people of the wrong party.
This wasn't an e-mail asking for comments. I was just told about it, after someone else was just told about it. That's a real nebulous way for information to be deseminated, but that's how it is.
I still think sending e-mails is something better than nothing.
Thanks, Nora, I look forward to getting more addresses. That address I was given is to the ODFW Commission. Not sure who Whitaker is, but it is a good address...I sent a test e-mail to see if it'd be bounced back to me and it wasn't.
I will post my e-mail I wrote when it gets checked, as I said. It sure is easier to just copy and paste, but just sending an e-mail with a subject of "bring back cougar hound hunting" or something to get your position across will certainly do.

This is the link to the page to send an e-mail to Oregon's governor. I can't find the actual address. You can send it from there though.
DonWhitaker@state.or.us is the e-mail for comments to ODFW Commission. Mr. Whitaker isn't the commission, just the contact within ODFW.
The meeting has been moved back to the January meeting. I am not suggesting people plan to attend, just send an e-mail:
Subject line: Cougar Agent Issue
and a short note that you do not agree with it.
This is what I sent, which you can copy and paste if you'd like:
Dear ODFW Commission,
Re Cougar Agent Issue
I think it is a waste of money and poor management to use money from hunter’s licenses to pay someone to go hunt the game Oregonians and out of state hunters would gladly pay to be able to hunt.
Measure 18 was obviously a poorly reasoned ballot resolution, a reaction to propaganda without clear thinking into the reality of controlling the bear and cougar population. The consequences are now becoming apparent, namely that the only effective way to control cougars is by hound hunting, ODFW is scrambling to keep vocal urban dwellers happy at the expense of true game management and the safety of rural crops, livestock and lives.
This blatant political pandering is irresponsible. If ODFW is charged with managing Oregon’s wildlife, then manage it effectively. Behave like grown-ups and quit acting like children squandering money that isn’t yours, trying to make the most friends…do the right thing: Sell tags for hunters to hunt with the best known method, and manage the cougar population while making revenue.
Sincerely,
