Ok, ok, this is not a chovinistic (sp) question AT ALL.. Its just a good question...for us beginers! Which Hound makes for the Better Hunter, Males or Females... or does it not really matter and its in their breeding and training? or......does it make a difference in some breeds!

lets here from plott, walker, BnT, tickers, currs and all hound lovers

All In all I think as far as hunting it does not really matter. I for one like females better and do not hunt or own males. I think it is more of a personel oppinion on what you like. I do not like dogs that stop and pee on every thing, I dont like dogs that Pee on there dog houses and I have had more fight problems out of males then females.

I think that eather sex huntes very well. Hunting ability depends more on the dog not the sex. I know people that will not hunt a male and I know people that will not hunt a female.

Good luck

I think it is all in the genetics and training on which is better.. You may have a preference that makes you a little biased but I don't think one it better then the other.

They all have their good and bad points.. female come into heat, usually during the worst time of year, but on the other hand, if you have a female worth breeding it is usually easier to find a stud dog then trying to find someone with a nice female who wants your male.....

I have seen just as many flat out mean females as males..

I think you can "tune" up a male for the sniffing and pissing.. My boys all know there is a time and a place for grabass, butt sniffing and marking territory.. When we are hunting, we are hunting... Of course I would never push my luck by throwing them an in heat female....

All about what ya like.. I lean a bit towards males..My boyfriend prefers to have more females... We try and just take them on a case by case basis...

There are more top male dogs then females. Period. There are top females but they're out numbered by their counterparts AT LEAST 2-1 probably higher. I personally have 4 females and one male but as far as super good dogs. Its mostly males. At least thats from my experience.

females are just easier to handle, brake, and take care of.

Never hunted with a female... I would worry 'bout them not be as aggressive but like I said Ive never taken a female "hound".... in the woods

Good question...

I have run males for a long while.... I'v had a few females that I liked, but normally don't give um much of a chance, they just seem to put a monkey wrench in my plans... Here we can only hunt coon from sept - march - minus center fire rifel season for both deer and elk so turns into a 4 month season before you know it, the HEATS i don't care for and the way my males get when one is in heat! I'd say I go ONE or the OTHER, not mixed, ok I take that back I had a nice lil female and I liked and she was not spayed but only come into heat 2 times in 4 years!!! Now if they were all like that I'd be change around my plans. I show also so I want my hounds to be intact! The boys mark on everything!!!! Get that over sexed hase in there eyes and can like most creatures can only think with one head at a time!!! Each have their down falls, but I believe a good female is less hastle than a good male! Not to mention folks are WAY MORE apt to let you breed to ne of their males than Their female, other wise you get a pup off the female and a male you do not know so much about, because it's theirs! You get what they chose to breed to her.. You have you own dandy female and you will have far less time spent looking for a Male to breed her too! If pups are out of the question & you don't show Cut um all and have a mixed pack!

on the UKC coon board a while back they had the same poll with more females winning the poll. I myself have both males and females. I think its a nurture question not a nature question

I noticed we got off subject. The question was "what makes a better hunter". Not whats most convinient. Theres a reason why, like nikki said, you'll spend less time looking for a male to breed to. I have 4 females and one cut male and they do just fine. I still say for TOP dogs. There are more males than females.
