ive been having some problems with my cameron pup this year with coons. now its almost cat season so coons are no more for me. i had two the other day. my buddy let one go at 8:30 am and i showed up with my pup at 9:15 am. we went up there and showed my pup the other one in the trap and he went bull shit on it. so at that point i held him back and let it go in front of him in a field. it ran hard so let him go about 20 yards behind it and he opened up and was into the woods before we could blink an eye. he was opened right up the whole time and i believe he treed for a bit but by the time we were able to get in there( he was about 75 yards into the woods) he was circling in there but we couldnt find the damn thing so i dont know. i was very pleased the way he went on it at first though and it was a start. he stayed right in the area circling while we looked but couldnt find it. next story. the first one we let go at 8:30 i put my pup right where we let it go along with my buddies dog. my pup ran right down the track and opened up while tracking it but then lost it and was never able to pick up the track again.
my question::: i want to know is it normal for a pup that hasnt been worked much on tracking to loose a track. he opened right up on it and it was about 2 hours old at that point. im hoping he just n eeds tracking experience. i was still very please with my pup.( hes a 1 year old bluetick)
what do you all think????

Sounds to me that he is getting the idea. All dogs are bound to make a lose the trick is having a dog that is willing to make a recovery. The more they make these recoveries the faster they get at doing so. You have to remeber that a dog that runs drifting the track, is constantly making a lose they just have fast recovery times. Thats my opinion anyways. The more you hunt the lil fella the more they learn, try hunting him in the snow so you can see and possibly help him at times.

were getting a bunch of snow on monday so were gonna try and cut a track on tuesday this week. he might just take a fresh cat track on his own. i have posted about this before but i was having problems with him not running with our older hound while we were coon hunting. he was going off and doing his own thing. but the last few times we went out he ran with her until the tree, then he treed for about a minute or so and then took off. but im working with him now on the tree. today he treed a coon tail for a good solid 10 minutes before i let him have it but he was going by sight. its a start though. it was the first time ive worked with him on the tree except while we were out hunting. had a bad coon season this year so i couldnt work with him much at the tree. but the way he acted today made me feel good about things. im not gonna run him on coons any more though. just cats and gonna try bears with him next year. thank you guys for your posts. my pup has def given me a head ache this year training him but. its part of hound hunting and im sticking with him. he will come around and it just brings him and i that much closer as a hunting team.

Sounds to me he's right on track. I have a almost 13 month old walker that does similar. Before you know it he will tree. Hopefully, he waits for you to catch-up to the tree
That will come as well as he gets even older and matures. Won't hurt running him with a older hound but it wont make or break him but would help. Hang in there he's doing well..

Your hounds will be a hunting machine in not to long. Bond with them and work on there handling. Good hounds will hunt everything its up to us to break them off we don't want them treeing.
At 13 months my hounds only problem is waiting for me to catch-up to the tree. Im still working with him on that. Part of this is me being 40 pounds over weight and lagging too far behind.
