hunt a pregnant female?
I have one that is about half way to term and would like to keep her in shape as long as possible. I was just woundering how long you guys and gals run your dogs into they're pregnancy.
I know this was dicussed on here a long time ago but I think the info was lost in the shake up . Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks a lot.....Steve...

I really don't have the best anwser for you ......BUT I had a female Cur dog work a hog 3 days before she had pups...they were all fine and the people that saw her work bought every damn pup they could....Really i think that a dog carries for 63 days and by the 35th day she needs to rest and worry about those pups ..not hunting

I did some really bad miscounting on our female who had pups and hunted her up to two weeks due. I was going to quit at 3 weeks due. We led her into a tree a week before she had them. Her poor belly was just about dragging. My next litter I am going to lay her up at 3 and just make sure she gets plenty of excersize...

Even if your calculations are perfect the dog may just decide to have them early. Unless you want to try finding them dropped all over the woods you shouldn't hunt too close to when they are due. The dog needs exercise to be strong enough to have the pups. Put her up too soon and she will lose muscle tone and possibly have a hard time of it when she's in labor. From what I've heard people say (we haven't had a lot of pups here) about 2 weeks before they are due is a good time to keep them home but still let them run a bit in the yard every day.

My first attempt was an accident so it didn't count. My second attempt at breeding resuted in a false pregnancy, so on the third attempt I layed her up from the day I bred her. She was an older dog that I really wanted puppies out of. She had 8 the second time and was fine. I don't know if it helped but thats what my vet said to do. I also know of a female that gave birth at the tree. Apperently the guy didn't know she was pregnant. So it really might not matter. I'd lay off when she started getting uncomfortable.
Thanks for the replies
