Wolf control program hampered by lack of snow

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- A lack of snow is hampering the state's wolf control program, now operating in five areas of Alaska.

There is about a month left before the program ends for the year.

As of Thursday, pilot-gunner teams reported killing 79 wolves so far this winter, far below the state's objective.

The Department of Fish and Game had hoped to kill between 455 and 670 wolves this winter, including those taken by private trappers and hunters.

Fish and Game spokeswoman Cathie Harms says this time of year can be the best for tracking wolves, but only if there is enough fresh snow, which so far hasn't happened.

The total harvest since the aerial program was launched in 2003 stands at 746 wolves, an average of 150 a year.
