Dog feed!!!

Postby Maynardshounds » Sat Jul 11, 2015 11:22 pm

So I was just think about all of the cramp that is in some dog food?
So I just hated to see what everyone else thought also. What are us hunters feeding our hound?
Think this should be a good topic...

Feeding almost 100% meat right now. You can get meat free just about anywhere so it makes no sense to spend money on dry food which will keep your dog alive but if your feeding 100% dry food, your dogs will never perform to their best ability. You can feed it raw or cooked. Best meat for your dogs is horse or beaver. It's much healthier for your dogs. Vet bills go down to near zero and your dogs energy levels and stamina are much higher. Feeding dry food might be convenient for you but it's the worst thing you can be doing for your dogs.
Get a hold of your local guy that picks up dead horses, he'll be glad to give you a carcass when ever you need one. An old horse that he had to put down just because it was old will keep most guys supplied for a year.

I've added mean couple times in the winter just for more protein. I can always get beaver so I'll get some of that never knew that was the best for them. I feed victor for hi energy dogs. It has no corn and 30 g or protein. My dog do very well on it I've been using it for a while when I had some beagles I fed purina. But when I started to research and I switched to victor and I really like and and I do notice my dogs have more energy. But I really think I'm gonna try half meat that sounds like a really good idea and I'll try it.
What do some other guys do?

Purina isn't all bad. I feed Pro Plan Sport. Dogs look great and perform great. It's easier I guess but sure works for me.

I am still feeding the Black Gold Performance Blend 26-18 and the dogs and I love it. Very little waste and dogs don't overheat on it in this desert. Great muscle tone and shiny hair coats. And the price is still very competitive for a 50 lb. bag.
I have converted a lot of great houndsmen over to this product and all of them love it.
Adios,

It's good to do homework on feed for many reasons... Purina and a few other brands donate money to PETA and other other anti groups. So in turn, I will not buy their feed to fuel my hounds or sled dogs. Essentially you are supporting them for them donate to orginizations to fight against several dog sporters.
I too try to feed a high meat diet, not 100% yet for the hounds but close because I have the resources and time to do so. Boiled salmon, moose, and other meats, if you cook it past well done. Dogs perform great, it's what they have been eating for thousands of years. The broth left over from boil goes in too, and they drink it and keeps them hydrated, which is great way to keep them hydrated in winter when water bowls can freeze. its great for those hard keepers that are picky and don't want to put on weight either, haven't seen a dog turn down meat yet.
I would highly recommend if attempting feeding meat to do your homework. Salmon poisoning is prevalent in the lower 48, trichinosis from bears can prove fatal as well. Be VERY careful as to what you give raw. If properly educated, meat is the best thing you can give them though, in my opinion.

AKZach,

Do what all the mushers down here in Willow do, at least part of the year. Feed your dog those colored-up chums and pinks! I am actually just learning how to do this (my wife has a great dane, need cheap feed) but a lot of the mushers go adn get a few limits of not-so-tasty chums, and somehow translate them into dog food.

Luke,
I got a the personal use permit for dipnetting copper river this year, for 65 salmon and 1 king. Spent a couple days there and my freezer is packed!! It was great! There is also a whitefish spear fish permit coming up in August here, I am going to try my luck with that as well. How are you coming along down there??? I might be headed to anchorage here in the next month or so maybe we can get up and do lunch or something. I'm looking to have another hound shipped up here soon as well. Did you ever give Conrad a call down there in wasilla?? My wife has been handling for a sled dog kennel here for a while now, got some huskies and the kids are into that junior mushing. Works for me, I let her do her thing with them and I get to have the hounds.

Tear up your Visa card.they support PETA too. Actually I tried to find where Purina sponsors PETA. Didn't find it yet. Did find Visa. Oh well.

Found where PETA disparaged Purina for doing feeding trials. Vets recommend foods that pass AAFCO feeding trials. Pro Plan does. Did see where Purina supplies feed to shelters at the AMS. I also considered Black Gold but no where local for me to buy it.
