Red dot for night time predator hunting?
Red dot for night time predator hunting?
I'm thinking about putting a red dot on my shotgun for night time predator hunting. Does anyone do this? Sometimes at 40-50 yards I have a hard time seeing my bead. I feel I can just put the dot on its eyes and game over. I'm just not sure how a red dot and a red light will work together? Any info would be great before I buy one and find i can't see the dot very well with the red light. Thanks!
Re: Red dot for night time predator hunting?
For hunting with a red sight on a shotgun, you'd generally shoot the load you hunt and zero on the center of the pattern... The idea of a red dot is to turn it to the lowest setting possible that you can first see the dot, this will give you the best moa(rifle) but won't matter much with a shotgun.
When predator hunting with a red light, I'd turn the brightness of the red dot all the way up, you shouldnt have a problem with it (provided that you have a decent red dot sight that has several brightness settings). These days with the ar's becoming popular, green dot sights are becoming a pretty regular thing to see at gun shows and sporting good stores, shouldn't be hard to find one at all at a bargain price. I wouldn't pay top dollar for the 3-4 moa and less sights, as it's just not going to matter on a shotgun, especially at 40 yards or less. If not, change the filter on your light. Red will help your eyes adjust faster than other colors at night, but there are other color options that will also allow easy eye adjustment like blue and green.
For an even cheaper option, they make glow in the dark, phosphorescent, and luminescent paints that can be bought for <$15. It's the exact paint that trijicon and other night sight companies put on their "night sights" for pistols etc. just apply 2-3 coats to the bead with a tiny brush.
