another one

Here is another story from George Pavey. He can't seem to get on the forum so I'll post for him.

Dale Lee- Experimenting with New Technology. I had the pleasure and privilege of hunting with Dale Lee, one of the most experienced and well known big cat hunters in the world in my younger days. We had just came back from a 5 month jaguar hunt in old Mexico and made for summer camp in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson, Ariz.

We had approximately 25 hounds and planned to train some of the younger hounds as well as work with some hounds that still hadn't been broke off running trash- deer, raccoon, javelin, etc.

A fellow came to camp who was an engineer, I believe he was connected with the University of Arizona. He had brought Dale two dog collars with a control box to try out on his dogs. The box was approximately 4 1/2 " thick and 9 " tall, 6" wide with a 6ft antenna.

As I recall, it only had an on and off switch with no high or low setting. We began to experiment by using me as the tester. Dale would say to me, "George, you go out about 50 yards and hold on to the dog collar and see it it's working. Well after a few times of that I said to Dale one morning, "Dale why don't you go out and hold on to the collar and see if it's working?" He said in a slow drawn out voice "Now George, you have got to realize that this is a highly sophisticated piece of equipment and I am the only qualified one to work it." Then he chuckled. He never took a turn. Great times and great memories. This was the start of what is now known as Tri-Tronic training collars.

Don

Thanks for forwarding George's story.

I'm glad George is willing to share those adventures. My hunting has been better defined with the travels and people I have met, George is one of those fine individuals...George was introduced to the Lee brothers by a friend of mine that rode with me hound hunting for some twenty five years. Both lived in Tucson Arizona at the time. I put off meeting Dale for many years and he passed prior to making the trip to Tucson and jumped at the offer to drive to Lava Hot Springs Idaho to spend a few days with George. There I played with the original gourd Jaguar call used in Mexico along with the 30-30 rifle Dale was holding for the Full Cry magazine front page picture in 1993...George is last of the living to share time in the field with the Lee Brothers.

Where am I going with this story?
George is planning on attending the next Lion hunters gathering in Arizona and you all don't want to miss meeting him in person....He will keep you rolling with laughter!

Thanks again Don and best wishes and Prayers sent out for Billie!

When and where is the next Lion Hunters Gathering in Arizona? Might be fun to check out if it's not hours from me, of course I never made it to the Bobcat Gathering when I lived in Nor Cal either but hey maybe I'll try.

I do like these old stories, on Facebook there are always people bringing up the question of are todays hunters or dogs less skilled than the dogs and hunters of the past because of the new GPS and shock collars and I can't help but think about the fact that the Lee brothers, revered as they are by everyone, were some of the forerunners and developers of both e-collars and telemetry on dogs and if they would have had access to GPS you can bet your butt they would have used it.
Sorry, I just always think that's a funny debate...

I'm thinking George told me this picture was in the early 60's, 61 to be exact. He also told me the dogs names but I've forgotten. Click on it and you can order a framed print if you like.
