Garmin won't unlock maps

I have an Alpha that when I first got it would show the topo that was loaded at the factory. After using it for a while I now get a message when it turns on that says "can't unlock maps".
I got online and tried unlock codes/keys after registering the device but no dice.
I have an OnX chip that functions well but can't seem to see any other maps.
Any ideas on how to unlock it? Don't want to send it to Garmin in the middle of lion season.
