I got a 1992 toyota v6 ext cab 4x4 works A\C works heater works cruise control works cd player works i payed 900 $ for it and it has 347,119 miles on it and still runs like a bat outa hell and believe me i drive em hard and put em away wet this truck takes a beating day in and day out. It goes to the hills every weekend and has for a while now and plus its my everyday driver and I hunt 3 to 4 times during the week I put alot of hard miles on the sob thats for sure. Only had to replace e g r valve for smog purposes and catalitic converter. When I got it I had to replace fan clutch like 60 $ I replaced the battery and alternator and starter cause I like to know i have less chances of getting stranded. Truck was stolen from my driveway got it back stripped out and im still driving it lol.. Sorry to change subject but sounds like you fellas need an old piece of shit to hold up lol.. Good luck with the trucks.

Oh trust me you arent changing the subject because thats the next place I was going with it. Thats the exact type of truck I was planning on getting. Everyone else has told me that the older Tacomas are even better. Maybe its because mine was the first one of the 2nd Gen Tacomas because its an 05 but damn screw this. I have buddies with older Toyota pickups like yours and older tacomas who are just as hard if not harder then I am on mine with no problems! Found a tranny at a local junk yard, once its fixed Im either trading it off or selling it. Thanks DC Doggin because that just goes to show with someone who hunts as hard as we do that the older trucks lasted.

Well I got my truck back from the shop with a new short block motor and wouldn't you know it the check engine light is still on. So I took it back and they hooked it up, now my cats are bad! And wouldn't you know it they aren't covered on the warranty. So where it sits now is new was 8350.00 and I had a 100 dollar deductable lol so I can't complain really. They quoted the cats at 1650.00 so they are going to stay bad lol. They said they won't hurt anything ever just a little more crap coming out of the exhaust than the emissions call for with that pickup.

And trust me my wife and I are buyin a megacab next but I will still hunt in the yota cause about 99% of the roads I hunt are too narrow and too brushy to turn a full sized rig around on. Trust me I know. I've been driving my uncles dodge since my yota died :) boy was that cummins power nice!

I'm surprised my buddy Kenny hasn't chimed in on this one. he has a nineties model toyota that thinks it's home is in the auto shop. you name it, it has broke or went out. not to mention he bumped a pine tree at 10 mph and caved the whole truck in. I think i'll stick to my fords, they might not get the gas milage, but they will withstand the horsebeating that I give them.

Thats weird his older toy is having problems. I have one that has been rolled, and I have jumped it(all four wheels off the ground on purpose) with only minumal problems. The o2 sensor plug was broke in the wreck andjust hard wired just not that good, so it runs like crap.

Got my new transmission, goes in Tuesday, got a couple other things order, damn thing is going to be brand new and time to hit the road. Buying my buddies 94 Toyota Pickup Flatbed. Its a houndsmans rig but getting rid of the payment will make me able to afford anything that goes wrong. I dont recommend getting the first year of any vehicle either, that sure doesnt help, they end up not having any of the problems worked out. Buddy has an 08 but doesnt hunt with it or go off the pavement much that has had 0 problems but most of my 107,000 miles are hunting miles.

I have found that running oversized tires can overload the tranny. I had an older truck that I ran big tires on and did a lot of freeway driving as well as off-roading. I lost a tranny every 30K miles just like clockwork. Turned out to be the oversize tires putting too much torque on the tranny.

Instead of getting a late model Toyota PU for hunting I got a 93. They were going for about $6K at the time, but I found one that needed a lot of minor fixes, and had low oil pressure for $4k. I did a lot of minor fixes, like replacing dash lights and stuff and ran it for 3 years before a rod started knocking at 170K miles. I just spent another $2K to have a new long block with a new head installed. I could have done it myself for about $1K using a rebuilt head instead of a new one, but the weather sucks and my free time is limited right now.

So now I have a 93 with a new engine for $6K. From what I can see it's relatively bullet proof, and I expect to run it without a major failure for another 10 years. I'd say look for an older truck, but they're hard to find.

Recheck your warranty. Emissions equipment is warranted under federal rules and can be covered way longer than other engine parts. I'd also be very suspicious of the timing of the problem. It sounds like they screwed up the wiring during the installation of the new engine. The cats may not be bad at all. The O2 signal that is used to test the efficiency of the cats is a millivolt signal, and any kind of dirt or corrosion, bad connection, or broken wire can cause the signal to be degraded and the cat efficiency error to be thrown. Take it to somebody who can read the actual millivolt O2 signals at the computer input terminals and at the O2 sensors. If you run it like it is you'll probably be running it at full rich mixture, which will play heck with the mileage as well as the plugs, cats, etc. BTW, the O2 signal should be cycling every couple of seconds between .1 and .9 volts. If it's steady at greater than .9 volts or steady at near zero volts you've got problems other than bad cats.

how big were the tires? was it regeared or did it have the stock gearing?

Oh my buddies tacoma gets between 18 and 20 I think, compaired to my ranger with stock tires that gets 12 or my v-10 with huge tires that gets 6 I thought that was good. if the milage isn't the plus then I'm really gona stick to my fords, cuz they will out climb, out snow, out mud that yota with it's meaty tires all with stock hyway tires on. plus you can hit trees, catch air and just generally beat the fords and they take it. I know those older yotas were that way too. I just think mid nineties and up they started building them out of tin foil. there still aint nothin that looks the part more than a yota with a shiny crome dog box in it and a winch on the front.

The Tacoma's were great up until 2004, now they are just black top 4x4's. About the only advantage over a F-150 or Chevy 1500 that I see now is the smaller size for narrow roads/turning around. I'm really considering ditching mine for a full size but hate the hassle of switching out rigs.
