Coyote decoy dogs

Post by Benny G »

I've looked through the coyote threads (not all of them I'll admit) and didn't see anything about decoy dogs. My son in law has a started dog, but won't let me use her. He has been training her the hard way. I first saw decoy dogs in action with Craig O'Gorman years ago. I am interested in the availability and cost af a trained dog.

Finding a trained dog is going to be tough. Alot of guys have alot of different ideas on how a trained decoy dog is supposed to work. Kemmer mnt curs are used alot for decoy work, and alot of guys are useing the smaller terrier breeds with success. Talk to Mr.pacojack, or Rockcreek on here they have experience with decoy work. I've owned a few decoy dogs, but never a dog that worked to consistently well. My dogs usely chased off more coyotes then acutually tolled them in. Decoy dogs seem to work best in the spring and summer when coyotes have pups on the ground and more courage(not when fur is prime).

Thanks Nate. I've also considered calling O'Gorman.

I have used small labs - worked pretty good, but even a small lab is big enough that it intimidates them I think. Used a couple of Original mountain curs - love the size of the dogs I had, I just couldn't get them to stay in the hunt on days where we made several stands. I had a pair get ahold of one of my original mountain curs and chew him up pretty bad. His heart wasn't in it after that. Bought two Kemmer pups - one is out of Tommy Trotts High Dollar Okie Joe dog, the other came from Cal Allen. I love them both. Maybe I just got lucky, but they have made the best decoy dogs I have had in approx. 15 years of decoying. I would like to have a couple more. I would like to buy another Striker bred Kemmer if I could get one from Cal Allen or Derril Fry's line of dogs.
Are there any more around? Does anyone know of anyone still using this line?

I have the first of the series of vids from O'Gorman's and one thing to keep in mind is that you MUST be right on top of a active den to get the coyotes to get enough guts to challenge a dog big enough to hold it's own.

The size and agressiveness of your dog does play into the equation but when it's all said and done ....... no active den (or you're not right on top of it) ....... no "play".

These little dogs seem to work pretty good..And I know John Henry of the Coyote God site uses Airedales and has had good luck with them.. He had one years ago that was amazing at bringing a coyote back to the gun..
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Shock collar with a toner on it seem to work the best when training a decoy dog.

I don't have any experience dogging coyotes, but have always been interested.

Here's some guys that seem to have it figured out! Some quality video clips and interesting reading.
