a guy told me that after he skins his beavers he ties the carcuss to the base of a tree . if it is covered up when he checks it he knows a cat has been feeding on it and starts the track.

I have never run a cat off bait actualy joined here to learn about it more so I could. But I bait to attract em for calling and sometimes hunt the bait like we hunt deer. Now here where I hunt anyway cats are not real thick so what I do is put my trail cam up and watch my pile till I get a cat. I'd assume if you had cats comin in you could easily run it like that.

Another hint which I thought was crazy wen my dad told me but it works hang something shiny above ur bait jus high enough the cats can barely reach it draws em in real good. I use scratched cd's and broken Christmas ornaments my dad and uncle use that method for trapin and put the trap under the tree I use it to draw the cats in to my bait it's like dinner and entertainment lol but I'd assume u could run cat off bait i may try that now lol

In the frozen north, if you can get permision to pick up road kill deer, take them in to your area and place them strategically where you can safely run your dogs. Cats will use them as long as they are fresh, which is all winter in the north. Everything else is coming in too, so make sure to keep young dogs on the correct cat track. It can be kind of a mess getting a clean track lined out of there. You may or may not hit the bait at the right time to trail one out of there, but it is one more place to check for tracks, and can be productive. You wont need lure or any other attractor with this method. the tied beaver carcasses would be the same thing.

I have learned from Mr Clay, and Mr Clay that they can not do this in the south, as meat spoils and cats will not use it.

Tiz, I strategically place beaver carcasses where I like to bobcat hunt. and you do have to put them in a tree, because the coyotes will make short work of it. I try to condition my cats to stay in areas that are little easier to retrieve the dogs from, but arent easy enough for every tom, dick, and hairy to locate. I did not trap any beaver this year, nor did I get any carcasses from anyone so I expect this year will be a little harder to consistantly find cats to run, but baits do work for cats!

This is what I found, OK I got one of those silly buttons with the little light like a bar maid would wear, I hung it over a small bag of cat nip and checked it about once or twice a week for about 2 months, well third week in I actually started one from there, don't know if it worked or if the cat wandered in, but I knew a old timer that swears by the blinking light when box trapping them, haven't had time to try again
