coon hunting handguns
Thinking of trying a Ruger Mark II or III for raccoon hunting. I know several folks that use big revolvers for bear. Anybody hunt with a handgun with coonhounds (my hands are getting pretty full)? What model and have you had any problems with glare off a stainless piece like the Mark III Hunter?
Danke.
Danke.

I have a old blued barrel 22 ruger revolver and i also use a contender 22 hornet
Re: coon hunting handguns
I carry a Walther P22 with a Laser site. A little pistol is great when your by your self with a bunch of dogs, but when that coon is way up in that cottonwood not so much.

Re: coon hunting handguns
I hunt with guys that use hand guns, mostly .22 and with all the ammo they have wasted trying to knock coons out with those miserable things they could have bought a nice .22 rifle. I cant hit shit with a pistol so i stick to my .22 rifle.
it does suck packing around a rifle on your back with all the twigs and brush cathcing on it, but i sling the rifle around my front so the barrel is pointing to the ground and the gun goes cross ways across my chest. hope you find what works for you

Re: coon hunting handguns
After many nights lugging around a rifle and having what montananative speaks of happen, I bought a pistol.
I bought a Taurus HMR revolver and was happier than a pig in shit!
I took that pistol to the range and anywhere I could shoot it. I got damn good with it and was shooting sub MOA groups.
Coon season came and I bought a Mikes camo holster and put it on my hip and was over JOYED!
I took 3 shots and my buddy shot once with his rifle and we called it a night.
I went out alone one night and the dog got treed on a double and I, honest to GOD, shot a whole box of HMR ammo... 50 rounds and NEVER once hit either coon. I had to call my step dad, who showed up with a rifle. He shot twice and dropped both coons.
A week later I sold the pistol and have since packed a rifle LOL!

I have an old ruger single six with a long barrel on it. Works great! Sometimes i feel like im packin a rifle. But its easy to aim and shoots well. Im not sure on the exact lenght on the barrel but i think it got to be around 10 in.

Browning Buckmark 22lr pistol. Have been really happy with it. Just don't shoot coons with the lead free bullets from Winchester. They don't even phase them.

Re: coon hunting handguns
I know your thread is directed at pistols, what me and my hunting friends used were either a Marlin 2 piece camp rifle that we packed in a game pouch. Or my little chipmunk .22, it's real small, but it still has a scope and can reach the tall trees with no problem.
A little more to pack than a pistol, but a nice alternative to consider.

Ruger Mark II or a ruger single six is all we use especially when a coon wants to run into a old house.
If it has fur I chase it.

Re: coon hunting handguns
I use a Contender pistol with a .17 HMR barrel. Equipped with a laser sight, it has virtually eliminated torn hound ears from coons falling out with the sand left in-em! Kind of combines the accuracy of a rifle with the carry- convenience of a pistol.
