CHECK

Post by slowandeasy »

C.J. mentioned the word check on another topic. i was wondering how many understood what he is talking about. and if so what is a good check dog. and how valuable is one in order to have a high percentage of tracks finished.

I do not remember the post was he using {check} like we say broke? What post and I will go back and read it. What they have to say is right on for there hunting in the south. Some of us believe that what works in one area will work in others we just hunt different because of our style and environment. If any of you guys need any rain come on out and get some I getting tired of it. Dewey

A check dog is not only a broke dog but it is the dog that will check in on what other dogs are doing and come back and let you know if it is not right. a lot of broke dogs will possibly not trash with the other dogs but may just go off and do their own hunting for the right theng or they may even hide out until the Tri-Tronics party is over, but old DOUBLE CHECK will come back to you and say. Listen Dad those dudes are goofing off but i want you to know that i had no part of it. that is a check dog..............

When you have a good check dog you can cut your training time in half with others and it is also so valuable when you are trying out new dogs.

I had a good blue dog back when i was a kid and we had no tracking collars or shock collars. Old Earl hated a whipping and it wasn't long and was b roke and also a double check dog. He sure showed me quick what a bunch of crap my other dogs were and i had some friends who had some Night Champion dogs that refused to hunt with me because old Earl would call Bull $hit on all their trashy ways. LOL!!

Question to you old timers about this. Do you think this trait is bred in or trainer oriented?

C.J., i knew that was what you were talking about. i had spoke to Robbie about it earlier. i was just curious how many others were aware how the word was also used. some might say so and so is my best check dog, and mean that it is constantly the dog that straightens losses (checks) in their pack. it is mostly used that way around running dog and beagle guys. take care!
