What voices carry best ?
What voices carry best ?
Here is a question for y'all, what type of voice carries best? The loudest and best carrying voice dog I've been around had a deep bawl. He could be heard a mile away pretty easy on a cold silent night. I've got one deep bawl female that is ok, but her littermate has a shrill yip chop that I can hear best above all mine. My older pup has bawl mouth that is low toned and hard to hear, the other one I haven't figured out yet..kinda a bawl, sometimes chops too.

Well....if your getting tone deaf like me, you will be able to hear one or the other, course mouth or fine mouth. I can't hear low tone sounds near as good as I can high tones, so the high squealing mouth dog is easier for me to hear.
Talking about how far you can hear, I have noticed with the garmin, you might have your dogs working a trail 200 yards from you but on the down wind side and they sound like they are 1/2 a mile in there. Then on the other hand they might be 1/2 mile in there but on the up wind side of you and they sound like they are right there close. The garmin system has sure saved a lot of steps!!

I hunted with Flint, a dog that I sold to Horsefly Murr at Cleo. The male is seven years old and is without a doubt the loudest hound I have ever heard in the woods. He is a big, stout hound with a huge classic bawl mouth that can be heard well over a mile in calm conditions. His sire was a dog by the name of Clear River Diamond Jim and was supposed to be the loudest hound in OK. His owner claimed he hear Diamond Jim treeing over two miles away if it was calm.
We were hunting the Pecos River Canyons a couple of weeks ago, I was hunting a male with a mighty pretty bawl mouth. when Old Flint opened, he not only drowned out my hound, I was afraid he was going to start an avalanche by shaking rocks loose!
I agree that a hunter's hearing or lack thereof will dictate which hound he can hear. And you are sure right about the Garmin and the wind pressure. The other morning, my dogs were trailing about 450 yards upwind and it sounded like they were within 100 yards.
Adios,
Gary

Even when I was a young one high-pitched squealing type voices tended to carry the best. Take care!

Re: What voices carry best ?
I hear the high-pitched yap mouthed dogs better, that doesn't mean I want to : )...I really like a higher pitched bawl mouth myself, carries well and still sounds like a hound.
Re: What voices carry best ?
I've always been able to hear a high pitched bawl or squally type dog the best. You might not hear them quite as far in calm conditions as a good old deep bawl, but when the wind picks up is where they really seem to cut through. Voice is one of those "nice to have" things for me though, just like color. I usually like the color and voice of the best dog.

I like the big screechy , squally balls . U see or hear I guess a lot of them in the Ray bred dogs I'm huntin n breeding. I love it u can hear them a long ways away n over the rest of the dogs easily .

I am like others deep tones are hard to hear. High pitch are easier for me to hear. I like a bawl mouth dog as well as a chop month in a pack. I think the chop month is easier to read on track. I never breed for month, the dog that trees the most game has the best voice and is the one I like to hear. Dewey

Its the voices in my head that carry the best for me!
