Hound outrunning his nose!!
One of my year and a half old male walkers is out running his nose. I've had him on coon and shot them out on him. He is a good tree dog but he needs more work on the track. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated, thanks Cat walker

Tired hounds tend to outrun their nose less

He is young age and exposure usually takes care of it. Andy

Re: Hound outrunning his nose!!
What the guys have said is true but there are dogs that run tracks like that.Swinging wide and overrunning the track .How did his parents run a track? They don't always do very well by themselves but if you run 3 or 4 of them together they can be cat treeing machines .These type hounds tend to be hyperactive.

Good to hear from Shorty. I agree a tired dog is a good dog.

Thanks for the advice guys. Twist I think exposure is a big part of it. 1bludog, he does exactly that. Swings wide back a fourth, although he is a mellow dog.My dogs are out of Nelson Coles cat stuff and skip Coles bear line. The father of this male is a cold nosed striker and is a good locator. Not sure about the mother. I've tried keeping him on the lead as well. This will be his first cat season so we will see. Thanks again, cat walker

Seem like alot of well bred cat dogs tend to over run at a young age their nose is working faster than their brain but age and exposure kick in and they are hard to be out done after a season or two. Andy

Something to keep in mind, just because a dog appears to be over running its nose according to a visible track doesnt always mean it is over running the scent. Seen some some pretty good dogs be a ways off a track and still be keeping pressure on the game.

Re: Hound outrunning his nose!!
My experience has been dogs that over run tracks improve some when tired and with age, however, have yet to experience one that completely over came this fault. Yes it is very hard to not over run a bobcat track by at short distance at times , ( actually believe it is impossible) in my opinion running a bobcat track close is a bred in trait, a hound has it in their genes or they do not. If the dog has the brains to go with such an inherent style, that "swinging wide" can really make him look good if there are big rock piles in the area you hunt. The others are trying to pick it through mess after mess and the dog that swings wide catches the track coming out the other side.

A dog like this is a good addition to a well balanced pack as long as he is not opening till he has the cat. Just need to be aware that sometime he will be the hero and sometimes zero.

Thanks for all the advice. I will be excited to see what he does this season. After what everyone has said and the more I see him work I think a little experince will go along way and I won't be disappointed.
