*Need Help* Blueick

Postby BluetickGirl27 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 1:15 pm

Does anyone else with a bluetick or a hound in general have a problem with dry skin and dandruff? Anyone have any solutions? Right now Lucky is 1year and 5mo and is eating purina one smart blend large breed dog food which the vet recommended and is doing well on... But he just has such dandruff! This is my first hound so I don't know how their skin is supposed to be. My boyfriends blueticks (lucks's mom and sisters) live in outside kennels and so it's hard to compare. Lucky lives in my house. I'm in new york with the lovely weather changes which I know doesn't help much and even dries out my skin. But if anyone has any tips that would help I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!!!

I'm not familiar with the feed that your vet recommended, but if it has corn in it that might be part of your problem. You might want to try to add a Tbs. of olive oil or similar to your dog's feed every other day or so.

You might check to see if the feed that you are feeding contains the necessary omega 3's for your dog. I owned a pointer that had some skin issues and they all but went away when I started supplementing fish oil in the diet.

Try giving the dog a bath and get some salmon oil to add to dog food.. I'm feeding Canidae to my dogs.

After looking at Purina's website and the ingredients in their food, corn is the MAIN ingredient. When turkey or any other meet is listed in it's raw form it cooks down to be a very small percentage, weight wise, of your food. Switch to something better, it won't cost much more. Do a search on here of what feeds seem to work for others. Adding oil to crappy food won't help much and the added cost of the oil you buy would be offset by purchasing a higher quality food like Diamond, Candidae, etc.

I feed Diamond Hi energy. dogs look and feel great. But if u want some nice shiny coats, get a skun and gutted beaver carcass. freeze it and give to dogs...
