Just finished reading this, 1946 edition from the University of New Mexico Press. Elliott Barker author.
Very good read, although most of his lion dogs are airedales, not hounds. Lots of lion and bobcat hunting, plus some incidental tales from the year the author spent as predator control at a large private hunting preserve in New Mexico.

Yea the Lee bros tryed em said they was just too gritty for lion and jaggs said they just mixed it up with a shelfed cat or cornered jagg and got them selves masacured/ no good on cats for catch dogs, but did great trailen and treeing up .
There was a guy in Ca over on the coast who had em in the late 40`s and still had em in 66 causeDon Burkes bought me one of em his name was Rusty, he was about 85 lbs and a one man dog and a good coon dog and bear dog and broke/ he had a churp mouth on track and a chop on the tree .He didn`t like kids and a little boy allmost got too close too his chain one day and so I called Don up and he come got him, rather see him go than too kill that kid and I`m sure he was baiten in that little boy too get close enoughf his chain would reach him.
When Don come origionally looking me up too give me the dog I wasent home I was plum over to TowDoor Ca visiting Sonny Kndricks at his place . Up pulls Don Burks towing a one stalled horse trailer and he tells me hes got a present for me and allready been to the ranch out of Knights Landing and my folks said I was here visiting Sonny, so he come too let me see the dog. I looked in and there was this big fukk airdale and he snarrelled at me and growlled ! I said Don thats an airdale ?! He said yep and he begin too tell me about how good he was on bear mtn lion and also will tree a coon and is broke ! He said yoy said ya wanted a bear dog Jackie, well hes a real deal and I believe Don give a hefty price backthen in 62 for the hound or Airdale. I said ok and he said hes a one man dog and the only way I`m going too letyou have him is if you can go into that horse trailor and fetch him out yourself, if ya can he wount never try ya again and he will know your his new owner !
Don explaines too get a two x four board and no nails in it he said lay one on his head a good lick,but flatt side of the witht of the board so ya don`t kill him ! Watch him now he is goen too try too eat ya up now ! Hey he wasent lieing the dog was on a bull chain and he backed plum up into the very back and stood his ground and he got pumped till that board come down on the top od his head and I rushed in and got my hand through his dog collar and unsnappen his bull chain and I drugg him out of the horse trailor/ Sonny said Lorrdy that kid allmost knocked him plum outhe was snickereing sayen look he sure crossed his eyes ! The dog was dazezzed allright. But Don told the truth from that moment on ole Rusty trusted and respected me and we was budds . But Don had allso warned me that the dog hated kids !So he ended up going back too Don within 45 days from my home and he did tree coon along the Sacramento River and I was fixxen too go to the big woods come Oct ith him.
