Re: Let’s talk.
My best guess would be shedding as well, its really starting to heat up here in montana but last week we had 2 days that there was frost i n the valley and 31 degrees so I think heavy shedding just started.

Man I’m jealous! It’s so hot here that I know some folks that literally cooked hot dogs on their dash the other day. Not just hot but the humidity is crazy too. That poor bear would want to be naked if he was here.

We have floated the river twice now and I'd be perfectly fine if winter showed up tomorrow, the mosquitoes are so bad this year even when its 85-90 degrees and scorching sun you are getting eaten alive.

Yeah skeeters are bad here too. It’s miserable at times. I believe these might be some sort of hybrid, I’ve seen some of them crow and any 4 at one time can carry off pets and small kids.

Re: Let’s talk.
Hot and humid in the east. Have to get up real early here if you want to get a run in. Wish I had a place within driving distance that got any place close to thirty. Ran in to a rough bruin a couple weeks ago so several of mine are enjoying their rest. As far as dog feed I have gone to pride red and grey the cheap bag during the summer as long as I'm running under four days a week. That recommendation was made by some one who sells it. It is cheap I thought it would not hold up but with rising prices figured I would try it. They seam to handle the heat well on it. I transition to higher quality pride in fall winter. I'll cut in the high tess during summer when needed. J fishing here has been outstanding. Caught about 50 Smalley's yesterday, need to make it this way. Headed north in near future to escape heat and get hunting camp and baits rolling for this fall.

White: I wish I could run baits here in NV. I would run bears too. You guys bacl East have it rough with the humidity. I’m glad we don’t get it here. The sun just set and the RH is still 15%. That should with a 10k ish acre swampy area next door. What used to be 18k acres of irrigated pasture is now a large, shallow lake due to the snow melt off the Sierra Nevadas this year. We’ve pretty much ran out of places to put water already… Huntin has been tough because the rain has caused the ground to be crusty and hard enough that I barely leave tracks when I’m walking in the mountains.

Re: Let’s talk.
We got to make a little hunt a couple days ago. I would’ve been content with one hog but it was a honey hole of another buddy’s that we hit. The dogs weren’t on the ground a minute and were bayed within 200 yards of the buggy. He tried to break a couple of times but they wouldn’t let him just leave. Got him caught and the dogs relayed 3 more times. We caught 3 more and the dogs at the last one. We tried to water them at a stock tank but they weren’t interested because they were winding more hogs. We went ahead and cast them since they seemed to be in pretty decent shape heat wise. Within 5 minutes we had another hog caught and loaded dogs up after that. A couple of them had already relayed but we called them in. It was a good little hunt and done early.

Re: Let’s talk.
That’s a darn good hunt! I don’t think I’ve relayed that many. I’ve had split bays then relayed 2 maybe 3, but never 5. That’s good dog work and ought to make you proud!
I’ve been hunting some but it’s hot, dry and the lions aren’t where they used to be. I’m trying to find the mountain sheep so I can hunt around them. Haven’t had any success with that yet. Just got a dog back from a buddy. He’s had her on a bunch of bears but she got beat up a couple times so she’s shutting down on a rough one now. I’m gonna give her a chance out here in the desert and hopefully she’ll do good. She’s almost 2 and has been on around 75 bears.

Re: Let’s talk.
Thanks guys.
Rowdy, we usually relay multiple times but with this heat we really have to pay attention. Our dogs usually leave for the next hog before we get the hog on it’s side good. Some of our rougher dogs will wait until it’s completely down but it’s still quick. I think the most we’ve caught in a day was 26, not little pigs either. Hogs have evolved to really run so we usually average 8-12 a hunt but there was a time when the average was a lot closer 15-16. This spot was a honey hole and had it been cooler we could’ve caught a pile. We are in a heavily infested area. It’s good but it can make it hard to make hard hunts. If they only get the easy hints they’ll get sorry and lazy on you.
Sounds like your female just got a little rattled. A little over exaggerated loving after catching or treeing a beat will probably encourage her. At least she’s showing signs of getting smart instead of dead.

Re: Let’s talk.
Law- I gotchya, the population where I used to live isn’t that good. During the summer and fall when the acorns were dropping they would move into the ranches where I had permission to hunt. They would stay there throughout the fall and winter then move out in the spring when the wallows dried up. I would then go hunt the public land but never caught any up there. Lots of acreage, lots of pressure and very little access. The hogs were starting to change from holding and fighting to more of breaking and running as I got out of the game. My dogs were real good at making one sit down. One of my best dogs would pull nuts out if I wasn’t there in 5-10 minutes. He was 1/4 McNabb, 1/4 Queensland heeler and 1/2 Catahoula. I couldn’t tell you how many hogs he had been on. Probably in the range of 3-400 by 7 years old. I was pretty hard on the population because I was removing them for the ranchers.
Now I’m out of that game and I have walkers, blueticks instead of catahoulas and pits. It’s been a fun learning experience but I sure do miss the violence lol. Lions are super cool though. This little female I just got back is a throw back to the old fountain walker blood. I took her mother that was supposed to be Nance bred (I tried to confirm but couldn’t find the breeder) and bred her to Twist up in Montana. Twist is the grand son or great grandson of Topper Again. Andy Jensen owns and bred him. These dogs are next level smart and I struggle just to keep them in the kennel. They break out and go hunting. I had to resort to putting one on a chain because I can’t keep her in. I have 3 females and a male left from the breeding. Too many for me to effectively hunt and it shows. No fault of theirs. This little female I originally talked about went to my buddy which is who I got the dam from. He hunted her for a year and the bears in his area are rough. Got 3 real good dogs killed this winter. Two on the same bear at the same time. So she got ate up bad earlier this winter then started shutting down and coming back when a bear decided to fight. He was going to cull her but we made a deal to trade a dogs. She’s got tons of experience trailing bare ground but with significant better conditions. I’m hoping she can transition to the desert as good as her mother did.

Re: Let’s talk.
I’ve never hunted any nance dogs or the topper again dogs. I have Lipper blood in the makeup of these dogs I hunt. I love a dog that is hell bent on shutting down a runner. These dogs drive really hard. If a hog breaks they go as hard as they can trying to catch up and stop it to the point that they won’t have hair around their eyes and nose with briar thorns buried in those places. They have the brains you speak of too. You don’t have to teach them every little thing because they figure it out most times after doing it once or twice. They can make an average hunter look like a pretty decent dog man. I bet your gyp transitions fine. Sounds like it’s definitely in her background to be able to.

Re: Let’s talk.
Man I don't know how you guys handle those hogs alive, just thoroughly had my ass kicked by one of the kids 4h pigs
had to hold him down to drain an abscess on his face and boy was it interesting to say the least. At one point he climbed the gate and was eye to eye with me
he's probably about 210 pounds right now and his strength is surprising. But third attempt i finally won
