Feeding Dogs Venison

i was wondering if anyone else has fed their dogs venison. i was thinking about taking a couple extra does this year and feed them to my dogs. i didn't know if there was any diseases they could possibly get from it being uncooked or if it is ok for them to eat it. also, if anyone has fed their dogs venison, how did it work? did they maintain good weight over the winter?

Yes, I feed my dogs raw deer meat all winter long. The lady that lives next door is a big time dog judge and travels all over. One day I was talking with her and looked at her dogs teeth and the where white. I ask her about and she told me she feeds the dogs nothing but raw meat.
The deer proccesser is glad to give me Meaty deer leg bones and the dogs love it. I also feed grown dogs and pups raw chicken.
I feed raw meet mostly in the winter because of flys.

i feed'em venison in the winter and chicken necks the rest of the time. they do great on it

A dogs digestive system is a lot stronger than ours. They can break down the things that make us sick. My family feeds a raw diet and the dogs are looking and doing great. There is a lot of info on the subject all over the net both for and anginst. It does not get real cold around my part of the woods, but we have found that the dogs have more energy and use less water during the hot summer months of Texas. Also less waste to clean up because the dogs are not getting all the filler like the grains in kibble. Go looking around the net and educate yourself on the subject because there is several different ways to feed. They need so much meat to bone ect, but once you get it all figured out it is no different than scooping kibble. Some will just throw a carcass out and let the dogs feed as they would in the wild.

i am just wondering how much to feed them and how often. i am planning on still feeding regular feed but just cut down to maybe half. i can get all the deer i want i have the tags for them and storage. plus here in the winter i can just leave it outside for them to feed on. i think i am going to cut them up into chunks and store in my freezer and throw a chunk out every so often. i have a couple empty freezers. there is definately no shortage of deer or tags. they pretty much want them all gone.

on some forum I read where feed 3% to the 100 lb - 50 lb dog that would be 1-1/2 lbs running hard go 2 lbs raw meat.

One man said his dogs were broke from deer, feed them a week on deer first time out all ran a deer. but you could hog,beef most feed chicken .

one guy was getting thighs for 40 cent lb that was cheaper than bagged dog food.

i reccommend keeping the does for you and feed that big buck to the dogs.
seriously, i fed roadkill deer to my dogs as well as scraps from the deer for the family. combined w/ plenty of roading and actual running the results were great. dogs can survive of the grain & soybeans in kibble but the best performance is off a more natural diet. just make sure if they get mostly meat to feed them some fat. the nice thing about bones is the fat in the marrow.

Hey everyone, interesting topic, alot of answers here that I have been wondering about but have never looked into it yet.

A tiny bit off the topic, but not really,

Last winter I was feeding my hounds an occasional Beaver carcus, but it
seemed to me the dogs all got more wild like, growly,wolf like, with each
other when I feed them the meat compared to the dog food,

Is this somthing anyone has noticed when feeding venison/meat or do I just have a bunch of Culls here ??

were they actually fighting or just growling? did you feed them as group or individually? when fed as a group (ie throwing a carcass in the pen and letting them go) they may well be rethinking their social hierarchy. if they settle it w/o fighting good. if not be prepared to remind them who's in charge. it wasn't a problem for me as i only had two and it didn't affect the dominance between them. it also didn't affect their attitude toward other people's dogs.

No they were not fighting just hovering over it with some growling that came out of them that I was not familar with out of a couple of them ever before, and thought I would stop feeding them with meat just incase.

Three were seperate/chained, and they were find until I let the two that stayed in the house go out for their romp in the yard freely,

your probably right though with the social hierarchy, ecspecialy when my two males come out of the house and they do not recieve any meat, and they probably are sniffing around wanting some maybe, and the bitches are probably protecting what they feel is theirs ??

makes since now that I think about it, cuz the dog food is gobbled up and gone, nothing to growl about, but the bones from the meat are stashed by the females, for later nawing.

i feed mine solo, and i can reach in and take raw meat from their mouths without so much as a growl

I actually gave my Walker a ice cream bucket of venison scraps yesterday and some bones. But my dogs are extremly fat anyways, why do what I do? Maybe I should feed them some of the 300 pound coon I get. :lol:

id consider dogs fighting over meat --- a training opportunity --

it does bring it out in them - compared to dry dog food-

i have to watch close when i turn mine loose to load up-

theyve been known to bring a bone with them and there is no peace in that dog box when somebodys got a bone

Some dogs get protective of their food and some don't. In all honesty it doesn't bother me a whole lot if one of the hounds growls off the lab when he sneaks in trying get a quick snack. I'll get after them for it, but I don't press the panic button. If it carries over to hunting scenarios or in the box then we've got a big problem. Then I either fix the problem or if I have to get rid of it.

One thing I don't put up with one bit is ANY growling at me or someone else. I generally have a "come to jesus" talk with them about that and they usually get the picture.
