A.I. questions

Post by blackpaws »

i was just wondering about A.I. and if it is worht trying. let's say i have a female that i want bred to a male that is in Montana and didn't have the time to bring her there, would it be worth trying to A.I. her? what is the process? what does it usually cost? what is the success rate of A.I.? any input on this is appreciated as i have always wondered if it works.

I AI'ed a bulldog bitch twice. The 1st time we had the male there, collected and put it in her all within minutes. It was simple and effective, we only had to do it because the male was too lazy to finish the job hisself   .

The second was mail order semen and it was EXPENSIVE and ineffective. We had to rent a freezer container for the semen and have it shipped to him ,overnight it to us,back to him ,back to us and ship it back ups.Plus the vet checks, AI lady ect. I think I had $800 or $900 into it and got no puppys.

I personally would be scared to do it by mail again.

The cost varies, depending on the vet at each end.
If both vets know what they are doing, success is vurtually 100%.
12 Gauge just went thru this process and could shed some light here.

Joe, just got some info from my vet on this just like liontracker said if you have a good vet the out come is great if you have a vet that has AI dogs before we can make it work. Here is the procedure that would have to be fallowed. Draw in morning and overnite it with fed-ex. Container to keep it cool is around 50.00$, collection is 50.00$ for vet to prepare and package is 40.00$ and overnite shipping is between 60.00-80.00$ from my end, I dont know what your vet would charge to AI. My vet told me it is very important that the female have blood work done to monitor exact day she will ovulate to know when to send semen. Everything has to be scheduled just right and your odds of a good litter are great. Hope this helps. later Andy

You can plan on paying about $100 more than the stud fee for the semen and $250 to $300 for the A.I. depends on how you want it done. If I were to pay that much I would have it surgicly done, this way you increase your ods of getting a bigger litter even over natural breeding.
I thought you would see the price of shipped semen drop in price because you can get several breedings out of one collection and you don't have to deal with the bitch or the owner of the bitch

If you use frozen semen, you will have to rent a special shipping container and put up a deposit.
