Question? Guys listening to cat race and they say. They are getting the cat broke down pretty good.
Dad's Dogboy can probably tell me excactly what this means. It was plain listening they were still running him but what does this change represent?
I am pretty green on this stuff, but I like to learn.
Thanks

Maybe that term "breaking him down" means the dogs are getting the cat to run tighter circles.........which allot of time they do just before they tree.........
I'm probably wrong, but just a thought.

Folks with running dogs speak an entirely different language. I remember one time when I was on here and I said something like "run em back on" when we were having a discussion about dogs feet. I think there were a bunch of computer screens gettin dirty looks that day.
With "good" running dogs, its not if they are gonna catch it, its when. They play the battle of attrition extremely well. With bad running dogs all you will catch is a headache and a cold if you are out in the the weather.

Mr. Mike,
The term refers to the Cat settling down in one area, and has someelse just said the circles are getting tighter. This usually means the end of the race is closer than the begining.
You should hear the Hounds Mouths getting a little more intense. Pups are getting more pick ups. The noise level is more sustained.
Hope this makes sense!

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

If the cat trees & he is setting up there with his tounge hanging out & huffing & puffing, you know your dogs broke him down.
4 or 5 speed & drive dogs can get this done.

Good one Twist......that was funny. I feel the same way these days. I've caught plenty of cats in the past, but the pack I'm feeding now are passing up cat tracks like crazy. My buddy hunted in the same area as me all winter (he hunted during the week and I hunted weekends) and he treed way more cat than fox. I was thinking there weren't many cat in the area as I only treed 2-3.
Turns out they are there, but my dogs are passing 'em up I guess?????

Re: Getting the cat broke down pretty good.
C. John,
That makes perfect sense to me now just getting the terms squared in my head.
I have seen a cat settle to a plot of about say 150 feet by 150 feet and go to circling really tight and what has amazed me at times im blundering around in the circles and here I find the cat crossing my track and before long he has laid tracks all over the place and dogs are hitting here and there and all over and it can be a mess. that is where the vetrans really help they go to the air and and even in pretty tight brush they seem to glue on and if they do and keep the pressure on usually the cat goes up. sometimes the cat will try to sull up and a lot of the dogs will go right by him and here again is where the vetran nails him and he closes the deal.
