Hunted Sat night & sunday morning

Post by Hipshooter »

I hunted in nw Kan in the big canyon country.
We had 40 thousand acres of private land with permission to hunt on.
It is pasture land with big big deep canyons & very few trees. Lots of bear grass or yucca or soap weed.
Sat night the wind got us, but we still jumped a cat after about 4 hr, dogs could run him good at times then most of the time, just barley keep him going. They did finally tree. & we walked into them & when we got close the cat jumped & a hot race for a little while & treed again. No cat in the tree, he pulled a fast one on them, never got him started again.
We got up and left at daylight Sun morn perfect conditions, no wind & foggy.
We started a cat the first place we tried, dogs run him 30 min then he took off acrossed a big open pasture, for a mile or so. Then we heard them hot but was not going any where. We finally walked close enough to see where they were & they were in a little swamp with big cat tails. They run him there for 30 min or so, then the cat decided to go back to where we started him. He didn,t make it back to the trees but they treed him in 6 humonges cotton wood trees, no other trees around.
There was so much folage we never seen the cat.
We started another one later , but is was getting warm & hot by then, they could not run him good, but did stay on him for an hr or so.
We finally got them loaded & called it a DAY.
So much for a good hunt. Our pups got some good training,

Hipshooter,

Sounds like you found a good place! Keep after them!

Scenting conditions might be giving you a tough time. Hootie had been having the same hard time holding a Cat after jumping him. His country is simular to where you are. He said the Wind was giving hiim fits again.

Good luck and come see us!
