Zack, I wouldn't disagree with your premise. But not too many guys are going to feed thier dogs and start running them in 5 minutes. So I can't really see that as a problem. 30-60 minutes is all you need to be safe. I'm just saying that not feeding at all in the morning, if that is when you usually feed, ( I feed twice a day if I'm hunting or not), is not at all good for your dogs.
My routine in the mornings during season is to feed the dogs first, then by the time I'm on the road and to my first property to check is probably at least an hour.

Re: Cheap food
Mine get fed twice daily, and only a 1/2 portion before hunting in the am, and 1.5 portion in the evening of the hunting day.
Good quality dry food mixed with the occasional meal of ground raw chicken necks and backs, rice, apples, carrots, squash, greens, potatoes, and or any other veggies I have around.
Would like to feed the BARF more regularly, but have get to buy a BF grinder to ease the task of processing all of this food. Not cheap either......

Re: Cheap food
I feed my dogs everything scraps, diamond dog food old cat food. When hunting season is in i will feed possums, coons. Also, rabbit and squirrel left overs that i don't eat. I feed goat carcasses after i get off what i want. I work in a chicken factory so i get discounts on fresh chicken and when a box get freezer burnt the dogs get it. we eat a lot of hog so the dogs get alot of gravy. I also stop and pickup fresh deer and butcher for the dogs. I will skin the possums and coon and cut off the head tail and feet and i have a big fire pit that stays going nearly all winter i put the whole carcass in a kettle and boil it till the meat falls off the bone then i cool it and feed it. They keep good and fat all through the winter. people used to only feed scraps and corn bread but there ain't many places milling corn anymore for dog bread.

I would check your local laws before doing this. It is agianst the law in most states. I know it is in Colorado. Right Dean?FullCryHounds wrote: Roadkill is easy to find, just drive any country road in the morning and pick up a couple of freshly killed deer.

In CO. the DOW will give you a permit to pick up and use roadkill. It must be used for human consumption.

Re: Cheap food
great post guys...Thanks for the insight. Started my dogs on raw scraps, about a cup full per dog with about a cup of dry dog food per dog mixed together. And i feed once a day. I change up the time of day i feed them so they dont get crazy right at 5pm like they use to. It worked. Now they dont bark automatically at 5pm anymore. Neighbors could set their clocks to it....
