Your Favorite Rifle

Post by three rivers catahoulas »

I was just wanting to see what rifle others like to shoot. My favorite is my M40A3 chambered in 308 Win, and next to it is my Barrett M99 chambered in 338 Lapua but I wouldn't mind haveing a Barrett M98B in a 338 Lapua.

CZ American .223, single set trigger put down lots of coyotes, bobcats, wounded deer and culled many a doe with this gun. Great truck gun lite, fast and accurate. Frank D.

I like the Remington 700. It's mostly all I know since that's what I've been hunting with since the begining.. It's second nature for me, and that's important to me.

I've always hunted with a 30-06, but I bought a Nice scope a couple years ago for better Light (and of course I Had to buy a Gun to go with it.. :D ) So I've been using a 300 Ultra mag, It's A Little big when on the bench zero'ing, I can get 3-4 shots before It starts messing with my head  and I have to put it down and sike myself back up for the beating..

Mine is a 25-06 Ruger m-77 with a leupold 4.5x12x50 on top, my favorite pistol is a s&w 686 .357, and the shotgun I like to hunt with is a good old 870 wingmaster. I like to keep it kinda simple and only shoot the same guns every season :beer

Forhe most part my Rifles are Remington's Both the 40X & 700 actions, My pistols are Kimbers( I'm a 1911 guy)and my Shotguns are Benelli's. I have some other ones but mostly thats how it is. I do like my one barrett, and I'll never talk down the good ol 870.

I have too many favorites to list just one. I am rather conservative when it comes to calibers but I am very particular about components and accuracy. I have seen hundreds of animals taken over the years and in the last five years I have seen more animals wounded and lost by guys that over gun and over scope themselves and do not put in adequate time shooting and practicing just thinking bigger magnums, flatter trajectories and biggers scopes will fill their tags.

Most African professional hunters have a much better grasp of calibers and proper bullets than do the idiots on the outdoor channels telling you what you need is a 300 Ultra Mag with a 6-18 Power range finding scope and a 180 gr. controlled expansion bullet going 3400 FPS to kill a 100 pound white tail deer. The art of hunting is leaving and now it is all about shooting and killing.

Trust me I like nice guns and I probably shoot more than about 90 % of the hunters I know. I build rifles, I tune rifles, I build custom loads and offer training for young people going on their first big game hunt or new hunters getting ready to leave on high prices trips to Africa, and other exotic places, where they may get one chance at a rare trophy. They need to be ready and know how and where to shoot. they need to learn to keep a cool head and follow the old White Hunters rule of thumb. ( Get as close as ya can laddie and then get 20 steps closer.)

Knowing that W.D.M. Bell killed thousand of elephants hundreds of cape buffalo, rhino, hippo, lions and such and never was bitten or stomped and he used a 7mm Mauser rifle with a solid 175 gr. bullet traveling at a moderate 2400 fps. But he was a cool head and knew anantomy and shooting disipline and he put the pill where the pain is, and that is what it takes. Killing a critters is not magic it is destroying it's life support system or shutting down it's central nervous system.

This being said a few favorites.

Small Game and pests: Custom octogonal barrelled Marlin 22 Magnum bolt gun.

Varmint in populated areas. Model 54 winchester in 22 Hornet.

Varmints and predators up to Coyotes. Rem. 722 bolt action 223 Ackley Improved with match grade shilen stanless bull barrell.

Long range coyote hunting and antelope and coues deer.Custom winchester model 54 bolt action 25-06 Ackely Improved with a 26" Match Grade shilen Stainless semi-heavy barrell.115 gr. Berger VLD match bullets.

Deer, and meat elk hunting. Custom Mauser 30-06 By Accuracy Systems Limited with a 24" Shilen Match barrel and HS Precison stock,
168 Gr. Barnes pointed Triple shock bullets.

Trophy Elk Hunting rifles ( I have 2 favorites) Custom mauser 338 winchester magnum with a 25" Lilja Match grade fluted stanless barrel. 225 Gr. Barnes TS bullets.

Chet Paulson Custom 358 Norma Magnum w/ 225. Gr. Barnes TSX bullets.

Favorite Handguns: Small game and treed coons bobcats 22 Colt Woodsman auto.

Larger Treed game cougars Smith and Wesson Model 66 Stainless 357 Magnum w/4" barrel.

Favorite saddle rifle: Rossi Model 92 357 Magnum lever action

If I could only have one rifle?

My Custom 30-06

One handgun my 22 Colt woodsman

One shotgun My Model 870 camo banger 3 1/2" chamber and choke tubes

Guns are just too much fun to only have one favorite. LOL!

I don't own it yet but I have been looking at many ballistic charts on the 30-378....Unreal ballistics for a .30 caliber gun. Check it out sometime....

Mine is a .243 Ackley Improved with a Rem. action, 25 in. stanless steel (powder coated) Lilja barrel and a McMillan stock. Two loads one is 87 gr V-max the other is 85 gr Triple Shocks. I shoot this rifle all year from gophers on up to elk..... yes elk.

I am not a fan of the big bores (jmo). I have hunters each year that show up with them, it use to be the 300 weatherbys now it has swithched over to 30-378's and the short mags. 90% of these guys cant shoot their rife because they are scared of them. It's made lots of guys sloppy, just cause you have one doesn't mean you can kill an elk at 500 are they capable of it... Yes if they practice.

If I had to pick a big boy rife, probably the 300 win mag. or the 300 short mag.
